Personal statement example
My interest in fresh water started with the small, unglamorous kind. For my final-year undergraduate project I surveyed macroinvertebrate communities in three urban ponds in my home town: one in a park, one on the edge of a retail estate car park, and one in the corner of a school field. I expected the park pond to be the healthiest. In fact the car park pond, which received road runoff, still held a reasonable range of taxa, while the school pond was dominated by a few tolerant groups and had a thick algal mat by late spring. Pulling together the kick samples, a simple ASPT score, and dissolved oxygen readings taken at different times of day taught me more about limnology than any single module. It also taught me how much a result depends on when you turn up: my dawn oxygen readings in the school pond were far lower than my afternoon ones, which reshaped how I interpreted the community data and how cautious I became about one-off measurements.
My degree gave me a broad grounding in hydrology, soil and water chemistry, GIS and statistics, and I chose options in freshwater ecology and catchment management wherever they were available. I worked in R for my dissertation analysis, mostly ordination and simple linear models, and I have continued to use it since to tidy and plot the monitoring data from my volunteering. What I want from postgraduate study is depth in the areas my degree could only sketch: lake stratification and mixing regimes, internal phosphorus loading, palaeolimnological records in sediment cores, and the modelling approaches used to predict how shallow lakes respond to nutrient reduction. I read Moss's Ecology of Fresh Waters during my second year and returned to it while writing up; the discussion of alternative stable states in shallow lakes is the idea that most changed how I think about restoration, because it explains why cutting nutrient inputs does not always produce the recovery people expect.
Outside university I have volunteered for two years with a local angling and river club. I was trained in riverfly monitoring and now do a monthly three-minute kick sample at a fixed site on our nearby river, recording the eight indicator groups and submitting the counts. It is repetitive work, and that is the point: I have learned to identify specimens consistently, to record honestly when conditions make a sample unrepresentative, and to keep turning up in February as well as June. Last winter I reorganised the club's paper records into a spreadsheet covering four years of counts and produced a set of plots for the annual meeting. Members who had fished the river for decades used it to discuss changes they had noticed, which was a useful reminder that data becomes valuable when people can see themselves in it.
For the past two years I have also worked part-time on the plant desk of a garden centre, advising customers on planting, drainage and pond care. It is a genuinely useful complement to my studies. I explain water chemistry and plant choice to people with no scientific background several times a shift, I manage my time across a busy weekend rota, and I have become far better at asking questions before offering an answer. I fit shifts around my studies and my volunteering, and I am used to working steadily under deadline pressure.
I am comfortable with fieldwork in poor weather, careful with sampling protocols and keen to build stronger skills in nutrient chemistry, sediment analysis and modelling. In the longer term I would like to work in catchment monitoring or lake restoration for an environmental regulator, a water company or a rivers trust, and postgraduate study in limnology is the right next step towards that.
