Personal statement example

My interest in glaciers began not with an expedition but with a spreadsheet. In the second year of my Physical Geography degree, a hydrology assignment asked us to separate rainfall-driven and snowmelt-driven components of a catchment hydrograph. I found the snowmelt part far more absorbing than I expected: the idea that a store of water could be held for months and released according to temperature, aspect and albedo made the landscape feel like a system with memory. That assignment shaped the rest of my degree, and it is why I now want to study glaciology formally rather than continue to read around it.

My dissertation gave me a first proper taste of glaciological research. Using freely available optical satellite imagery and a published glacier outline dataset, I digitised the terminus position of a small Alpine glacier at roughly five-year intervals and compared retreat rates with nearby meteorological records. The findings were unsurprising in direction, but the process taught me more than the result: how much uncertainty comes from cloud cover, debris cover and the operator's own judgement about where ice ends and moraine begins. I repeated a sample of my digitising blind, several weeks apart, to estimate my own inconsistency, and reported that alongside my figures. My supervisor's main criticism was that I had underused the elevation data available to me, and I agree. Understanding mass balance properly, rather than inferring it from length change, is exactly the gap I want a master's to close.

Alongside my degree I have developed the quantitative and practical skills this field demands. I took an optional numerical methods module and now work comfortably in Python, particularly with raster data and simple time-series analysis. I wrote scripts to batch-process my dissertation imagery rather than clicking through it, which was slower to set up and much faster in the end. My part-time job as an assistant in a university teaching laboratory has been quietly valuable: I prepare equipment for undergraduate sediment and water chemistry practicals, calibrate balances and conductivity meters, and log faults. It has made me careful about the difference between a measurement and a number, and patient with the unglamorous parts of fieldwork preparation.

I also volunteer with a river monitoring group, taking monthly turbidity, temperature and nutrient readings at two points on a local river. The work is modest, but it has given me four years of familiarity with what long records actually require: showing up in February, recording conditions honestly when the sampling point is unreachable, and resisting the urge to smooth over odd values. I share the care of my grandmother with my mother, which means my week is organised around fixed commitments. Rather than a limitation, this has made me a realistic planner. I learned during my dissertation to break analysis into sessions that could be completed and documented in the time I actually had.

My reading has increasingly drawn me towards glacier hydrology and ice dynamics, particularly how meltwater reaches the bed and how that affects flow. Cuffey and Paterson's textbook has been my main way into the physics, and I am aware of how much of it I understand descriptively rather than mathematically. I would like to strengthen that with formal teaching in ice physics, numerical modelling and geophysical survey methods, and to gain glaciological field experience under supervision, which I have not yet had.

In the longer term I hope to work in research or monitoring concerned with water resources in glaciated catchments, where the hydrological and the cryospheric questions meet. A master's is the necessary next step, and I am ready to give it my full attention.
