Personal statement example

For the past five years my working week has begun at a borehole on the edge of a chalk catchment, unscrewing a dip meter and writing a water level into a field book. I took the job as a stopgap after my Environmental Geoscience degree and stayed because the questions kept getting more interesting than the tasks. I can tell you how that particular level responds to a wet February, and which of our sampling points turns cloudy after heavy rain, but I cannot yet explain the flow system that produces those patterns in any rigorous way. A master's in hydrogeology is the step I need to move from recording data to interpreting it.

My degree gave me a solid grounding in sedimentology, structural geology and geochemistry, and my final-year project mapped superficial deposits across a small valley to assess their likely permeability, using auger samples and existing borehole logs. At the time I treated the groundwater element as a postscript. Working in the water industry has reversed that emphasis. I now spend my days around aquifers that are under real pressure: abstraction licences under review, nitrate concentrations that do not fall as quickly as anyone hoped, and long lag times between a change in land use and a change in what comes out of the ground. Nitrate legacy in the unsaturated zone is the problem I find most compelling, because it makes the timescale of groundwater impossible to ignore.

Because I have been away from academic study for some time, I have prepared deliberately rather than assuming I could pick things up again on arrival. I completed an online course in differential equations and worked through the early chapters of Fetter's Applied Hydrogeology, redoing the Darcy's law and pumping test problems by hand until the algebra stopped being an obstacle. I taught myself enough Python to fit a Theis curve to drawdown data from a pumping test my employer ran in 2022, comparing my transmissivity estimate with the consultant's. Mine was in the right range but I had underestimated how much the choice of early-time points mattered, which was a useful lesson in the assumptions behind the analytical solutions. I have also run simple steady-state models in MODFLOW through a free interface, mostly to understand boundary conditions well enough to know when they are being chosen for convenience.

My work experience contributes practical things that I think will matter on a course with fieldwork and a research project. I am methodical about sample handling and chain of custody, I have logged sediment and rock from drilling returns alongside a driller who was happy to explain what he was feeling through the rods, and I am used to planning a day's fieldwork around weather, access permissions and equipment that sometimes fails. I have trained three new technicians in sampling procedure, which taught me to explain a method rather than simply demonstrate it. Outside work I coach an under-fifteens netball team on Saturday mornings and help care for my younger brother, so I am practised at organising my time around commitments that do not move.

I would like to use the research project to look at nitrate or turbidity behaviour in a chalk or limestone catchment, ideally with access to an existing monitoring series. In the longer term I want to work as a hydrogeologist on groundwater resource assessment and catchment protection, contributing to abstraction and nutrient decisions rather than only providing the numbers that inform them.
