Why do you want to study this course or subject?

The stream behind my grandfather's allotment looks almost the same every week, and yet the numbers never are. He keeps a plastic rain gauge by the shed and has done for years, and when I started helping him empty it I began writing the totals into a notebook alongside how high the water sat against a marked post in the brook. Two similar rainfall weeks could produce very different responses, and the difference seemed to depend on how wet the ground already was and how hard the rain fell. That gap between a simple input and a complicated output is what pulled me towards hydrology rather than geography in general. I want to understand catchments as systems: how water is partitioned between infiltration, storage, evaporation and runoff, and how much of that partitioning we can actually measure rather than infer. Reading around the subject has shown me how quantitative the field is, from rating curves and hydrograph separation to groundwater flow, and that suits the way I enjoy working. I am also drawn to how directly the discipline matters. Flood risk, low flows in dry summers, abstraction for drinking water and diffuse pollution from land use are all questions my area argues about, and they are argued badly when nobody understands residence times or uncertainty in a gauged record. A degree that combines fieldwork, physical process and data analysis is exactly what I am looking for, and I would like to work eventually in catchment science or water resource management.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

Geography A level has given me the clearest foundation. The physical units covered drainage basin systems, storm hydrographs, channel processes and flood management, and my coursework investigation compared bank profiles and bed sediment at three points along a small local river, which taught me more about measurement error than any textbook did. My flow readings varied noticeably between repeats, so I learned to take several readings across a cross-section, record conditions carefully and be honest about the limits of what I could claim. Mathematics has been just as important. Working with logarithms, rates of change and interpreting data in the statistics component has made me comfortable with the idea that hydrological relationships are often non-linear and best described with equations rather than diagrams. Chemistry contributes differently: solubility, ion behaviour and acid-base chemistry have helped me follow reading about water quality, hardness and nitrate transport, and practical titrations trained me to work precisely and to write up methods clearly. Alongside lessons I have read Stephen Hawking-free, more practical material: an introductory hydrology textbook borrowed from my college library, the Environment Agency's public river level pages, and articles on chalk streams and groundwater-fed flows. I taught myself enough spreadsheet work to plot my rain gauge records against river stage, and I am now learning basic Python so I can handle longer datasets than a spreadsheet handles comfortably.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

For the past two years I have worked Saturdays and school holidays at a garden centre, mainly on the plants and outdoor section. It is ordinary work, but it has made me genuinely useful outdoors in bad weather and has taught me to explain things simply, whether that is drainage in heavy clay soils or why a water butt is worth having. Handling compost, gravel and soil improvers day after day also gave me a practical feel for how differently materials take up and shed water, which I recognised later in reading about porosity and permeability. I volunteer roughly monthly with a canal clean-up group, pulling litter from a stretch near the town centre and clearing the towpath. Working with a mixed group of retired volunteers and students has been good for my patience and organisation, and I now help set up the equipment and brief newcomers on safety. Seeing what actually ends up in urban watercourses has given me a blunter view of water quality than any diagram of a pollution source could. Fishing with my grandfather remains the thing I most enjoy. Long, quiet sessions have made me observant about water colour, weed growth and how quickly a river rises and clears after rain, and they are the reason I keep records at all. At college I play in the badminton team, which has taught me to commit to a fixture list even in a busy term. Together these things have made me reliable in field conditions, careful with data and comfortable working with people unlike me.
