Why do you want to study this course or subject?
For the past fourteen months I have walked down to the same brook behind the retail park on the first Saturday of every month, filled a jam jar, and tested the water with a cheap aquarium kit. It started as a way to make my Geography fieldwork skills useful outside of a single assessed trip, and it turned into the thing I think about most. The nitrate readings rise after heavy rain, and the stretch below the road drain is consistently different from the stretch above it. I cannot prove why with a £12 kit, but learning what my data can and cannot support has taught me more about environmental science than any single lesson.
What draws me to Environmental Studies rather than a pure science is that the brook is not only a chemistry problem. It runs past allotments, a school, a car park and a housing development that was approved while I was in Year 10. Any improvement depends on drainage law, water company investment, council planning priorities and whether local people notice the brook at all. I want to study a subject that puts the physical science alongside policy, economics and human behaviour, because the questions I keep running into sit exactly on those joins.
I am particularly interested in freshwater systems and in how monitoring data is actually used once it is collected. Reading about catchment management has shown me how much depends on the scale you choose to work at, and how easily a local improvement can be undone upstream. Over a degree I want to build the statistical and GIS skills to work with real datasets properly, and to understand how evidence travels from a sampling point to a decision. I am not certain yet whether I want to end up in consultancy, a regulator or a conservation trust, but I want to be someone who can read the data and explain it to people who do not want a lecture.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
My A levels in Geography, Biology and Statistics fit together well for this course. Geography has given me the physical processes and the fieldwork discipline: my independent investigation examined how vegetation cover on an urban river bank related to bank erosion, which taught me to design a sampling strategy I could actually complete in the time available, and to be honest about where my method was weak. Writing up the limitations section was harder than collecting the data, and more useful.
Biology has been the foundation for understanding ecosystems properly rather than as a diagram. Studying nutrient cycles and the effects of eutrophication gave me the vocabulary to interpret my own brook readings, and practical work on ecological sampling using quadrats and identification keys made me slower and more careful about recording what I actually see instead of what I expect.
Statistics has probably changed my thinking the most. Learning about sampling error, correlation and significance testing made me revisit my own monitoring notes and accept that twelve monthly readings from one site tell a limited story. I now keep a column for conditions on the day, because I learned that ignoring rainfall made my comparisons meaningless. I have used spreadsheets to plot my results and calculate simple summary statistics, and I would like to move on to proper statistical software at degree level.
Alongside my courses I read widely and unevenly. Tim Smit's account of the Eden Project showed me how much environmental work is persuasion and funding rather than science, while George Monbiot's Feral pushed me to think about what a restored landscape should even look like, and whether local people get a say in that. I also follow the Environment Agency's published river classifications for my own catchment, which has been a lesson in how much is already recorded and how little of it reaches the public.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
I have worked Saturdays and school holidays at a garden centre for two years, mostly on the outdoor plants and the tills. It is not conservation work, but it has taught me a great deal. I have learned to answer questions about peat-free compost and drought-tolerant planting honestly, including when I do not know, and I have watched customer questions change as summers have become drier. Handling the plant deliveries and stock losses has also given me an unglamorous sense of supply chains, waste and margins, which I think will be useful when I study environmental economics.
For three years I have helped my neighbour with her allotment plot, and last year I took on a half-plot of my own. I compost, save seed where I can, and keep a rough record of what cropped well. Two seasons of failed carrots in heavy clay taught me more about soil structure than the textbook diagram did, and a conversation with the site secretary about the water trough restrictions led me to read about how the site is supplied. The allotment is also where I have done most of my thinking about community and environment, because everything from bonfire rules to bee hives has to be negotiated between about forty people with different priorities.
At college I volunteer as a peer mentor for Year 12 students, running fortnightly sessions on note-taking and organisation. Explaining a method to someone who finds it confusing has made me a clearer writer and a more patient one. I also presented my brook monitoring results to my Geography class, which was the first time I had to defend a conclusion out loud and admit the parts I could not support.
Outside of that I walk a lot, usually the canal towpaths, and I have used a plant identification app for the last year to build a list of what grows along the industrial stretches. I check unfamiliar species against a printed key rather than trusting the app, which has caught my mistakes more than once. It is a small habit, but it is the kind of steady attention I want to bring to a degree.
