Why do you want to study this course or subject?
The brook behind our estate looks different depending on where you stand. Upstream of the industrial units it is gravelly and shaded; downstream it silts up and smells faintly of drains after heavy rain. For my extended project I sampled six points along it over four months, using a kick-sampling method from a river trust guide and recording what I found against a simple pollution-tolerance scale. Finding mayfly nymphs in one stretch and mostly worms and leeches in another taught me more about catchment management than any diagram of the water cycle had. What interested me most was not the pollution itself but the question of who was supposed to deal with it. The land belonged to several owners, the drainage was the water company's responsibility, and the footpath was managed by the council. Environmental management appeals to me because it sits exactly in that awkward space between science and organisation. I want to be able to interpret monitoring data and also understand planning frameworks, cost constraints and the reasons that sensible schemes stall. Reading about environmental impact assessment in Geography made me realise that being useful in this field means being able to write clearly for people who are not scientists, and to be honest about uncertainty rather than hiding it. I am drawn to a degree that combines ecology, pollution science, policy and practical fieldwork, because the problems I care about are never only one of those things. In the longer term I would like to work in catchment or land management, ideally in Wales, where agriculture, flood risk and habitat restoration overlap constantly.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
Geography has given me the most direct grounding for this course. Our coastal and river units required me to design my own fieldwork, justify sampling strategy and evaluate sources of error, and my human geography topics on urban regeneration and resource management showed how environmental decisions are shaped by economics and politics. I now expect to ask who benefits from a scheme, not just whether it works ecologically. Biology has supplied the ecological foundations: nutrient cycles, succession, sampling methods and the population dynamics behind conservation. Learning about eutrophication in class was what prompted me to test nitrate and phosphate levels in my own survey using a school-grade test kit, and to be cautious about what such basic equipment can reliably show. Chemistry has been harder but more valuable than I expected. Understanding solubility, pH and redox reactions helped me make sense of why contaminants behave differently in soils and in water, and practical titrations have made me careful about method and repeatability. Writing up experiments to a set structure has improved how I present results. Across all three subjects I have become better at handling quantitative data, and I have taught myself to use spreadsheets for graphing and simple statistical comparison rather than describing results only in words. I also took part in a college scheme where we researched a topic independently and presented it to staff and peers; I chose flood risk management in the Dee catchment, which meant reading consultation documents and summarising them for an audience with no geography background.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
I work Saturdays and Sundays at a garden centre, mostly on the plants and outdoor aisles. It is ordinary work, but it has been unexpectedly relevant. I answer customer questions about peat-free compost, pollinator planting and which shrubs cope with waterlogged clay, which has forced me to explain trade-offs honestly instead of repeating slogans. I have learned to handle stock loss, watering schedules and complaints, and to stay useful on a wet bank holiday when the tills are busy. The job has also taught me punctuality and how to work with colleagues much older than me. On alternate Sundays I help with the composting rota at a community allotment, turning bays, sieving finished compost and keeping a rough log of what goes in. Getting the balance of green and brown material right, and explaining to plot holders why cooked food should not go in, has been a small lesson in how systems only work if the people using them understand them. I also joined two litter picks along the brook I surveyed, which produced a lot of plastic sheeting from the neighbouring units and prompted a conversation with the landowner that I would not have had the confidence to start a year ago. Outside this, I play for a local netball team and organise our travel arrangements, which requires more chasing of messages than anyone expects. I read Fresh Water by Alice Outwater's style of accessible environmental writing when I can find it in the library, and follow the news on Welsh agricultural support schemes. I am ready for a course with regular fieldwork, reports and group projects.
