Why do you want to study this course or subject?

Working Saturdays behind the counter of a small chemist, I noticed that the same drug turns up in very different guises: salbutamol in an inhaler, in nebuliser solution, in tablets that are rarely dispensed. When I asked our pharmacist why the tablets are unusual, she explained that inhaling the drug puts it where the receptors are and keeps the dose that reaches the heart low. That answer sent me reading about beta-2 receptors, selectivity and the tremor my brother gets after using his blue inhaler too often. What appeals to me about pharmacology is that it explains effects and side effects with the same set of ideas: what the molecule binds to, how tightly, how long it stays, and what the body does to it on the way. Studying Chemistry alongside Biology has made me want more than the outline. I can draw a titration curve and discuss enzyme kinetics, but I want to understand dose-response curves properly, how partial agonists behave, and why individual patients respond so differently to a standard prescription. The idea that pharmacology sits between molecular detail and clinical decisions is exactly where I want to work, and I would like to move towards research into how existing drugs can be used more safely rather than assuming the answer is always a new compound.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

Biology has given me the physiological grounding I rely on most, particularly the modules on the nervous system, homeostasis and control of heart rate, where I first met the idea of receptors as targets rather than just labels on a diagram. Chemistry has been equally important: organic reaction mechanisms and the behaviour of functional groups help me see why a small change to a structure alters how a drug is absorbed or broken down, and practical work on titration and rates has taught me to be careful about uncertainty in measurement. Maths matters more than I expected. Logarithms, gradients and rates of change all appear in pharmacokinetics, and being comfortable with them means I can read a concentration-time graph rather than simply accept the conclusion printed beneath it. For my Extended Project I compared paracetamol and ibuprofen as over-the-counter analgesics, focusing on their different mechanisms and on why paracetamol overdose is dangerous in a way that is not obvious from the packet. Writing it taught me to distinguish between review articles and primary studies, to check sample sizes, and to admit where the evidence I could access was limited. I have also read Goodman and Gilman's introductory chapters in our college library, which were demanding but showed me how much structure there is behind a single prescription, and I follow the British Pharmacological Society's news pages for accessible summaries of current work.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

My pharmacy job is where most of my learning happens outside lessons. I handle stock rotation, check expiry dates, refer medicine queries to the pharmacist, and have learned to be precise about what I am and am not qualified to say. Watching the pharmacist counsel a customer about taking a course of antibiotics to completion, or explain why a cough remedy should not be mixed with something already on their list, showed me that pharmacology is only useful when it is communicated clearly. I now notice patient information leaflets properly and often look up the interactions mentioned when I get home. At home I help care for my younger brother, keeping track of his preventer inhaler and making sure his spacer is clean and his technique is reasonable before school. Doing this every day made me understand adherence as a practical problem rather than a statistic: he takes the medication that is quick and familiar, not the one that will help him in three months. On Saturday afternoons I volunteer at a community tea session, mostly making drinks and sitting with older visitors, several of whom take long lists of tablets and speak candidly about feeling groggy or unsteady. Listening without offering advice has taught me patience and made polypharmacy real to me. My grandfather and I share an allotment plot, which is less scientific but has given me a stubborn kind of discipline, since nothing there rewards impatience. Between shift work, caring at home and coursework, I have had to plan my weeks tightly, and I expect that habit to serve me well in a laboratory-based degree with steady practical commitments.
