Why do you want to study this course or subject?

What draws me to toxicology is that it deals in quantities rather than verdicts. In Chemistry I learned to work with concentration and dilution as routine calculations; in Biology I met enzymes that can be inhibited competitively or irreversibly. Putting the two together changed how I read stories about chemicals in food or rivers, because the useful question is almost never whether a substance is harmful but at what dose, by what route, and over how long. Copper sulfate is a fungicide and a trace nutrient depending on the amount, and that idea of a dose-response relationship is the part of science I find most satisfying to think about. Reading about thalidomide for a Biology assignment showed me how much depends on testing design and on which species, sex and developmental stage are studied, and how the regulatory systems that now govern medicines grew out of failures of evidence rather than failures of intention. My Geography A level pulls me in the same direction from outside: studying water quality and industrial legacy in the Black Country made me want to understand what happens to a contaminant once it is in soil or sediment, and why some compounds persist while others break down. A toxicology degree appeals because it combines biochemistry and physiology with statistics and risk assessment, and because the work leads somewhere practical. I would like to end up in regulatory or environmental safety testing, producing the evidence that other people rely on when they decide what is acceptable.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

My A levels give me the groundwork I will need. Biology has covered cell membranes, liver function, enzyme inhibition and the nervous system, all of which I can already see mattering to how a substance is absorbed, changed and excreted. Chemistry has been the subject that most improved my accuracy: organic mechanisms, functional groups and titration work have taught me to keep careful records and to be honest about the limits of a result. In Geography I have learned to handle real datasets, use sampling methods properly and write about uncertainty without overstating conclusions, which is a skill I expect to use constantly in risk work. For my extended project I investigated the effect of caffeine solutions on cress germination and early root growth, using five concentrations with repeats and controls. It was a modest experiment, but it taught me a great deal: my early trials were ruined by uneven watering, so I redesigned the setup, standardised volumes with a syringe, and randomised tray positions to reduce light differences. I found germination fell markedly at the highest concentrations, and I was careful in my write-up to say what my design could not show, including anything about mechanism. Working through the statistics with my teacher, and reading about LD50 and NOAEL values afterwards, gave me my first proper sense of how a dose-response curve is built rather than simply quoted. I also take Core Maths, which has made me more confident with logarithmic scales and graph interpretation.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

I work Saturdays and some weekday evenings on the pharmacy counter of a supermarket, handling sales of medicines, answering basic questions and referring anything beyond my remit to the pharmacist. Training covered which products cannot be sold together, the limits on paracetamol and codeine sales, and how to recognise when a customer needs advice rather than a transaction. It has made me think concretely about safe dosing, interactions and the reasons behind seemingly fussy rules, and it has taught me to stay calm and clear when someone is unwell, in a hurry or frustrated by an answer they did not want. At college I help run our science club for visiting Year 8 pupils, and I designed a short session on dilution using food colouring so they could see a strong solution become almost invisible after repeated tenfold steps. Explaining that to twelve-year-olds forced me to be precise about what I actually knew. Outside college I have belonged to a local hillwalking club for three years and now help with route planning and kit checks for group walks, which involves practical risk judgement and a fair amount of patient organisation. I also play badminton in a mixed doubles league. Between shifts, coursework and club commitments I have had to become disciplined about planning my week, and I was pleased to be asked to speak briefly at our college open evening about the extended project, which I would not have volunteered for two years ago.
