Personal statement example
I spent six years in and around diagnostic laboratories before deciding to return to academic study, and that time is the main reason I am applying. As a medical laboratory assistant in histopathology I received, labelled and prepared specimens, cut and stained sections under supervision, and kept the records that let a biopsy be traced from clinic to report. Most of the work was routine, but it made the scale of cancer diagnosis concrete in a way lectures had not. I saw how much information a pathologist draws from tissue architecture and a handful of immunohistochemical markers, and I also saw the limits: reports that described what a tumour looked like far better than they could predict how it would behave. That gap is what I want to study properly.
My BSc in Biomedical Science gave me the foundations in cell biology, immunology and molecular methods, and my final-year project pushed me towards tumour biology. Working with publicly available breast cancer gene expression data, I compared proliferation-associated transcripts across samples grouped by receptor status. The analysis was modest and my supervisor was frank about its limitations, but I learned to use R for the first time, to be careful about batch effects and multiple testing, and to accept that a difference in mean expression is not a mechanism. I came away interested in how heterogeneity within a single tumour complicates any signature built from bulk tissue.
Moving to a diagnostics manufacturer as a quality technician took me away from research, though it taught me things that academic study had not. I wrote and revised standard operating procedures, investigated out-of-specification results and prepared documentation for audits. Tracing a failed batch back through reagent lots and operator records is essentially a problem of controlled comparison, and it made me much more disciplined about recording what I actually did rather than what I intended to do. I also became the person colleagues asked to explain assay principles to, which improved my ability to pitch technical detail to different audiences.
Deciding to return to study, I wanted to be sure my knowledge was current rather than remembered. Over the past eighteen months I have worked through an online molecular biology course covering CRISPR-based screening and single-cell sequencing, and I have read around the field, including Weinberg's The Biology of Cancer, which I found useful for placing the signalling pathways I half-knew into a coherent framework of acquired capabilities. I have followed developments in immune checkpoint therapy with particular interest, partly because the mechanism is so different from the cytotoxic drugs I had assumed were the whole story, and partly because response rates remain uneven in ways that are not fully explained. If I can shape a research project, I would like it to sit somewhere around the tumour microenvironment and why immunologically quiet tumours stay that way.
I am applying for a taught programme rather than going straight to research because I want structured laboratory training in cell culture, flow cytometry and current sequencing approaches, alongside the statistics and experimental design to interpret them. Volunteering on Saturdays in a hospital charity shop has kept me in contact with patients and families and reminds me who the work is for. I am used to shift patterns, deadlines and being accountable for accurate records, and I expect postgraduate study to be demanding in a different way. I am ready for it, and returning as a slightly older student is a choice I have thought about carefully rather than a fallback.
