Personal statement example
My interest in microbiology began somewhere unglamorous: a jar of sourdough starter on a kitchen windowsill. Keeping it alive through a cold winter taught me more about temperature, pH and competition between organisms than any textbook diagram, and it made me curious about why some communities of microbes are stable and others collapse. That curiosity became academic during my BSc in Biomedical Science, where the microbiology modules were the ones I read around rather than simply revised for.
My final-year project looked at antibiotic susceptibility in Pseudomonas isolates recovered from garden soil and pond water. I learned to be patient with basic technique: streaking for single colonies properly, standardising inocula so disc diffusion zones meant something, repeating plates that had been contaminated rather than reporting a result I did not trust. Several isolates showed reduced susceptibility to agents I had assumed would be reliable, which led me into reading about efflux pumps and intrinsic resistance in non-fermenters. Writing the discussion was the part I found most demanding and most useful, because I had to separate what my data could support from what I wanted it to show. My supervisor's comments on overstatement have stayed with me.
Alongside my degree I worked part-time in a food testing laboratory, and I have continued there since graduating. The work is routine — preparing media, plating dilutions, enumerating coliforms and Enterobacteriaceae, recording results against specifications — but it has given me habits that I think matter clinically as well as commercially: labelling carefully, respecting incubation times, escalating an unexpected result instead of assuming an error. I have also seen how much of microbiology in practice is about traceability and confidence in a method, not only about the organism itself. Helping my father with the hygiene records for his bakery, including shelf-life queries and cleaning schedules, has shown me the same principles from the other side, where the person interpreting a result has no laboratory training and needs a clear, honest explanation.
My reading has pushed me towards the clinical side. Nicholas Feasey and colleagues' writing on invasive non-typhoidal Salmonella first showed me how differently an organism behaves depending on the population it meets, and Sharon Peacock's accessible pieces on sequencing in infection control convinced me that genomics is now part of everyday diagnostic thinking rather than a specialist extra. I have followed UKHSA reporting on antimicrobial resistance trends with interest, particularly around carbapenemase-producing organisms, and I would like to understand the laboratory decisions behind those surveillance figures rather than only the headline conclusions. I am aware that my current skills are essentially cultural and biochemical; molecular diagnostics, typing methods and clinically interpreted susceptibility testing are gaps I want a taught postgraduate year to fill.
I am drawn to postgraduate study in medical microbiology because it sits where my strengths and my interests overlap: careful bench work, an appetite for pathogen biology, and a preference for questions that have a practical answer at the end. I would particularly value a research project involving resistance mechanisms or diagnostic method evaluation, building on what I attempted at undergraduate level with better tools and clearer clinical framing.
In the longer term I hope to work as a clinical scientist in a diagnostic microbiology laboratory, and I am realistic that this will mean further training and competition. What I can offer now is a degree that gave me a solid foundation, two years of ordinary laboratory discipline, and the persistence that comes from repeating an experiment until the result is one I can defend.
