Why do you want to study this course or subject?
The road I walk to college has limes on one side and nothing on the other. In July the shaded pavement is usable and the bare side is not; in autumn the limes drop sticky honeydew that residents complain about. That contrast started me reading about how urban trees are chosen, funded and argued over, and it is the reason I want to study urban forestry rather than ecology or general forestry. I am interested in trees as infrastructure that has to survive compacted soil, road salt, utility trenches and people, and in the fact that almost every technical decision is also a decision about who gets shade and who does not. Geography gave me the language for that: I wrote coursework on surface temperature differences between two wards in my city and found the greener ward was also the wealthier one, which is well documented but far more striking when it is your own bus route. Biology and Environmental Science pull me the other way, towards physiology and soil, and I want a course that keeps both. I would like eventually to work for a local authority or a large landowner, doing tree inventories, species selection and planning casework. I am aware that the job involves refusing requests, defending mature trees to people who want them gone, and writing reports that will be read by councillors rather than botanists, and none of that puts me off.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
My A levels feed directly into this course. In Biology I have enjoyed transport in plants and plant responses most, partly because the xylem and transpiration work explained why newly planted street trees die of drought while established ones nearby are fine. My Environmental Science course covers soils, biodiversity measurement and pollution, and I used a quadrat and point-transect survey in a scrubby corner of our college grounds for an assessed piece, which taught me how much sampling design matters once the ground is uneven and half your species are unidentifiable. Geography has been the most useful for the human side: hydrology and urban regeneration units gave me sustainable drainage, permeable surfacing and the arguments developers use about land value. I also took Maths to AS and still use it for basic statistics, which I know I will need for inventory data and canopy cover estimates. Independently I have read Peter Wohlleben's The Hidden Life of Trees and found it enjoyable but noticeably one-sided, so I followed it with material from the Arboricultural Association website and the i-Tree approach to valuing canopy, which was drier and more useful. I have started learning winter twig identification from a key, which is slow work and has made me respect people who can do it from a moving vehicle.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
For the past fourteen months I have volunteered with the friends group at our local park, usually one Sunday a month. I plant whips, fit and check stakes and guards, water new planting in dry spells with a bowser someone tows over, and remove ivy and litter from around trunks. A retired forester in the group taught me to spot girdling ties and to mulch without heaping soil against the collar, and I now help brief new volunteers on those two things. Last spring I helped record survival of around eighty whips planted the previous winter; roughly a fifth had failed, mostly at the exposed end of the site, which was a blunt lesson in aftercare. Through college I arranged two days shadowing our council's tree officer. I carried equipment, held the tape and wrote figures into her tablet while she inspected highway trees, and I watched her take three site enquiries, one of which was a complaint about leaf fall. She showed me the condition categories she was applying and why a tree with decay at the base was treated differently from one that simply looked untidy. I was an observer, but it showed me how much of the role is explaining decisions. On Saturdays I work in a garden centre, advising customers on shrubs and handling stock, which has made me comfortable talking to people who arrive convinced they already know the answer. At home I share the school run for my two younger brothers, so I am used to organising my week around fixed commitments.
