Why do you want to study this course or subject?

The plane trees along the main road near my college were pollarded last winter, and for weeks I listened to people complain that they had been ruined. When they came back into leaf I started reading about why that cycle of cutting exists at all: the compromise between a large tree and the overhead cables, shop signs and pavement it has to share. That was the point at which trees stopped being scenery for me and became something managed, with decisions behind every branch. Arboriculture appeals to me because it sits between biology and practical judgement. A tree is a living structure that responds to wounding, drought and compaction, and the person assessing it has to read those responses and then argue for a course of action to a council, a developer or a homeowner who may want a very different outcome. I am interested in the science of how trees compartmentalise decay and how root systems behave under paving, but equally in the fact that most of that knowledge is applied under time pressure and in public view. I want a degree that teaches tree biology, soil science and survey technique properly, rather than one that treats trees only as a landscape feature. I am also drawn to the climate side of the work. Our town has planted a lot of small whips in recent years, and I have noticed how many are failing because nobody waters them in a dry June. Choosing species that will still be viable in fifty years, and establishing them so they survive their first five, seems to me the part of the profession that will matter most in my working lifetime. In the longer term I would like to qualify as a consultant, doing condition surveys and pre-development assessments, and I know that starts with understanding the tree itself.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

My A levels in Biology, Geography and Environmental Science each contribute something I expect to use. Biology has given me plant transport, photosynthesis and the structure of woody tissue, and the practical work has taught me to record carefully rather than approximately; my best mark last year came from an investigation into stomatal density on leaves from shaded and exposed sides of the same hedge. Geography has been useful for soils, hydrology and the human side of land use, including a unit on urban regeneration that made me think about who actually pays for street tree maintenance. Environmental Science pulled the two together through work on carbon storage and habitat fragmentation. For my Environmental Science coursework I mapped tree cover across three residential streets of different ages in my town, using a tape and clinometer to estimate height, measuring diameter at breast height and recording species and visible condition. The results were less tidy than I expected: the oldest street had the largest trees but also the most conflict with pavements, while the newest estate had plenty of small ornamental cherries and almost no canopy. Writing it up taught me to be honest about the limits of a small sample and to describe method precisely enough for someone else to repeat it. I have kept the recording habit going independently, walking a set route in my local park each month with a notebook and a field guide, learning to identify around forty species and to recognise common problems such as squirrel bark stripping, honey fungus brackets and included bark unions. I check my identifications against the Collins Tree Guide and Forestry Commission material online, and I have learned to be cautious: what I first logged as ash dieback on one tree turned out to be ordinary drought stress. I enjoy this kind of slow, repeated observation and would like to build it into formal survey training.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

On Saturdays I work at a garden centre, mostly in the outdoor plant area. I water and check stock, tidy pot displays, move stock in and out of the cold frames and help customers choose plants. Selling trees and shrubs has been unexpectedly good preparation: people arrive wanting something that grows quickly, stays small, gives autumn colour and never drops leaves, and part of my job is to explain gently what a plant will actually do in ten years. I have learned to ask about aspect, soil and space before recommending anything, and to admit when I need to fetch a colleague who knows more. The job has also taught me to work steadily through a long shift in poor weather and to take responsibility for stock that dies if I forget it. Since Year 12 I have volunteered roughly monthly with a community woodland group on the edge of town. We clear brambles from around young plantings, replace broken tree guards, coppice hazel on a small rotation and stack brash for habitat piles. The site manager has shown us how to sharpen and use a bowsaw and loppers safely, and I have seen how much of the work is unglamorous maintenance rather than planting days. Talking to volunteers who have worked there for twenty years has given me a sense of how slowly a woodland changes and how much of management is simply keeping an intention going. I completed a basic first aid course through college and am working towards my driving licence, which I understand is close to essential for site work. Outside this I play in a local netball league, where I have captained a team for a season and learned to keep people organised and reasonably cheerful. I am comfortable outdoors in bad conditions, methodical with records and used to explaining plants to people who are not specialists, and I would like to develop that into proper technical competence on a degree course.
