Why do you want to study this course or subject?
For several years part of my job was recording what we threw away. Bedding plants that had not sold, cracked compost bags, pallets, returned water butts: I filled in the loss sheets every Friday and then helped load the skips. Nobody involved was careless, and the reasons were usually sensible ones about space, shelf life and delivery schedules, but I started wanting to understand the system that produced those decisions rather than just the paperwork at the end of it. That is what led me back to studying. My Access course gave me the language for questions I had been circling for a long time. Learning about nutrient cycling made me think differently about peat-based growing media and where the phosphorus in fertiliser actually comes from. A geography unit on water resources changed how I read the hosepipe restrictions that used to affect our summer trade, because I could finally connect reservoir levels, abstraction and demand rather than treating dry weather as bad luck. I am drawn to sustainable resource management specifically because it sits between measurement and decision-making. I want to be able to quantify a flow of material, water or land use, and also to understand why an organisation or a council behaves as it does when the numbers point somewhere inconvenient. Reading about the circular economy has been useful but also clarifying: designing out waste sounds obvious until you consider contracts, storage costs and who owns the returned item. I would like to spend three years studying that gap properly, and then work in resource or waste strategy for a local authority or a large supplier, where the decisions I used to record are actually made.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
I left school with GCSEs and went straight into work, so returning to formal study at 32 was a considered decision rather than a drift. I enrolled on an Access to Higher Education Diploma in Science at my local college, attending two evenings a week and one day release, and I am now completing the final units. The biology and chemistry content has been the steepest climb. I had not balanced an equation since I was sixteen, and I spent the first term relearning the basics with a borrowed textbook and a lot of practice questions before I could keep pace with the class. Titrations and mole calculations eventually became the part of the course I enjoyed most, because they rewarded exactly the kind of careful, repeatable method I had used in stock counting. My strongest work has been in the geography and environmental units, where I wrote an assignment comparing kerbside recycling collection in two neighbouring authorities using their published performance figures. Explaining why contamination rates differed forced me to consider housing density and collection frequency rather than assuming residents were simply more or less diligent. I also took a short online statistics course to improve my handling of data, since I want to be confident with spreadsheets and graphs when modules require them. Studying while working full-time has taught me to plan realistically. I write assignment deadlines on a wall calendar at the start of each term and work backwards, which has meant no late submissions, and I have learned to ask tutors early when I have misunderstood something instead of hoping it will resolve itself.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
Eleven years of work has given me a practical feel for resources that I do not think I could have got from a classroom. In grounds maintenance I looked after planting, drainage and mowing schedules across housing sites, which meant noticing how soil compaction and poor water run-off create problems that cost far more to fix later. Moving into stores and deliveries, I became responsible for stock rotation, ordering and the returns process. I dealt with suppliers, drivers and shop staff who all wanted different things from the same limited storage space, and I learned to explain a constraint without making it sound like a refusal. When our branch trialled reusing plastic plant trays instead of accepting single-use ones, I was the person counting, cleaning and tracking them, and I reported back on why the loss rate was higher than expected: trays went out with customers and never returned. That small exercise taught me more about closing material loops than anything I had read. For the past two years I have volunteered with a group that clears litter and plants along a stretch of canal. We pull out a surprising amount of construction waste as well as the usual bottles, and I help with the tool store and sign in new volunteers on Saturday mornings. It is repetitive work, but I like the visible progress and the mixture of people. Outside this I keep an allotment half-plot, where I compost and collect rainwater more out of stubbornness than virtue, and I have been steadily reducing how much I buy in. I bring reliability, comfort with data and an understanding of how organisations actually behave to a subject that needs all three.
