Personal statement example
My interest in circularity began with something fairly unglamorous: sorting through a bin. For my undergraduate dissertation I compared contamination rates in kerbside recycling across two adjacent wards with similar housing stock but different collection systems. I spent several Saturday mornings at a materials recovery facility being shown what actually happens to a mixed load, and I learned that the technical capacity to separate materials matters less than whether the material arrives in a usable state. That distinction, between what is theoretically recyclable and what is economically recoverable, is what pulled me towards the circular economy as a field rather than waste management as a topic.
My degree gave me the environmental science grounding I needed: life cycle assessment, resource flows, and enough statistics to handle my own survey data honestly. I also took an environmental economics module that I found harder than expected and more useful than any other, because it forced me to think about why perfectly sensible reuse schemes fail when the cost of virgin material stays low. Reading around this since graduating has shaped my interests further. Walter Stahel's work on the performance economy and the idea of selling function rather than product made me reconsider what circularity requires of business models, not just of materials. I have also read more critical commentary questioning whether closed loops are achievable at current consumption volumes, and I think a serious master's should engage with that scepticism rather than assume it away.
Outside study, two ordinary commitments have taught me a good deal. I repair and resell second-hand bicycles, which I started doing at university to save money and now do a few times a month. It is an education in design for disassembly: some frames and components come apart easily and can be rebuilt with standard tools, while others are effectively sealed units where a single failed part means the whole assembly is scrap. I have also been helping my aunt, who runs a small reupholstery business, with costing jobs and sourcing fabric. Watching her turn away work because the labour cost exceeds the price of a new sofa has made the economics of repair very concrete to me. The barriers are rarely about whether something can be fixed; they are about time, skill availability and the price of the new alternative.
My job in a garden centre has been less directly relevant but has taught me about retail waste and stock decisions at a practical level. I have been involved in reducing the number of plastic pots we send for disposal by setting up a customer return point, which needed staff buy-in and clear signage more than it needed any clever idea. It was a small reminder that implementation is mostly about persuading people to change a routine.
On a master's programme I want to strengthen the areas my undergraduate degree only touched: material flow analysis at regional scale, product and business model design, and the policy instruments that shift incentives, such as extended producer responsibility and repair regulation. I am particularly interested in the repair and reuse sector for household goods, and I would like to use a dissertation to look at what makes community repair provision financially sustainable rather than grant-dependent.
In the longer term I would like to work for a local authority or a not-for-profit on reuse and repair infrastructure, where decisions are made about kerbside systems, bulky waste and household reuse shops. I am comfortable with quantitative work, used to speaking with people outside academia about waste, and realistic about how slowly systems change. I think that combination would let me contribute usefully to the course and to the work afterwards.
