Why do you want to study this course or subject?

The block where I take Physics was built in 1963 and behaves like a greenhouse in June and a fridge in January. Last winter I noticed people sitting in coats near the windows while the radiators were on full, and I started wondering what it would take to fix that without knocking the building down. That question is really why I want to study sustainable environmental design: I am less interested in designing spectacular new objects than in making the buildings we already have comfortable, efficient and pleasant to occupy. Geography gave me the wider frame, particularly units on urban heat and energy demand, while Physics gave me the language of conduction, thermal mass and radiation. Reading around the subject, I found the idea of fabric-first thinking persuasive: improving insulation, airtightness and ventilation before adding technology, because equipment can be badly installed or switched off while a well-detailed wall keeps working quietly. I also want to understand where sustainable design becomes a social question. A heat pump is only useful if a household can afford to run it and understands the controls, and shading a courtyard matters most for people who cannot escape the heat. What appeals about this course is the combination of technical modelling with design judgement, so that decisions about orientation, glazing and materials can be tested rather than assumed. I would like to work eventually on retrofitting ordinary housing and public buildings, which seems to me the least glamorous and most necessary part of the built environment.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

I am studying Geography, Physics and Design Technology, which between them cover most of what this course seems to demand. In Geography I completed fieldwork measuring surface temperatures and pedestrian flows along a high street, comparing a tree-lined section with an open paved section; presenting those results taught me to be careful about claiming causes from small samples. Coursework on sustainable urban drainage introduced me to permeable surfaces and green roofs, and I was struck by how often environmental problems in cities are really problems of how water and heat are managed at street level. Physics has been the most demanding subject and the most useful. Thermal physics, particularly specific heat capacity and rates of energy transfer, now sits behind how I read any building. Practical work on measurement uncertainty has changed how I treat my own data. Design Technology is where the strands meet: my major project was a proposal for retrofitting the college's 1960s teaching block, including external insulation, deeper reveals for shading, and a scheme for cross-ventilation using existing high-level windows. I drew sections by hand and in CAD, made a card and acrylic model to test shading angles with a lamp, and costed the insulation from suppliers' websites. My tutor pushed me to justify each decision rather than list features, which improved the work considerably. I have also taught myself to sketch in section, because plans hide the things I most want to understand.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

For the past eighteen months I have worked Saturdays and Sunday mornings at a garden centre, mainly on tills and restocking, and increasingly helping customers choose plants for difficult positions such as north-facing walls or dry gravel. I have learned a surprising amount about microclimate from that: which corners of the yard bake, where frost lingers, why the polytunnels need venting by nine in summer. It is also straightforward evidence that I can turn up early, stay calm with queues and work with people much older than me. Alongside college, I ran a small project at home logging temperature and humidity in my bedroom and the hallway with two cheap sensors, recording readings morning and evening for six weeks and noting when windows were open. The results were less tidy than I expected, and the main lesson was how much occupant behaviour affects any measurement, but plotting the data taught me to work with spreadsheets properly and to be honest about gaps. I volunteer roughly monthly with a community orchard group, pruning, mulching and helping at open days, where I have listened to residents argue about whether the site should have more paths or more wildflower area. Those conversations showed me that good environmental decisions still need negotiation. I swim before college twice a week, which keeps me organised, and I have started keeping a notebook of details I notice on the bus route: overhanging eaves, shuttered balconies, a new brick facade with visibly thick window reveals. I am ready to study these things properly.
