Why do you want to study this course or subject?

Two years ago I started keeping a notebook on the small allotment plot my family rents. I was recording germination dates and compost temperatures mostly out of curiosity, but the notebook slowly became a record of how many separate things have to line up for food to grow well: rainfall, soil structure, whether the water butt had been emptied, whether anyone had time to weed in exam season. That last factor interested me most, because it was not biological at all. It was about people's schedules, priorities and money. Sustainability science attracts me because it treats that mixture as the actual subject rather than an inconvenience. I want to study a degree where soil chemistry, energy systems, policy and human behaviour are examined together, since the questions I find most absorbing sit in the gaps between them. Reading Kate Raworth's Doughnut Economics sharpened this for me; I am not persuaded by every part of her argument, but the idea of judging an economy against both ecological ceilings and social floors gave me a framework for thinking about trade-offs instead of simply cataloguing problems. My Geography lessons on water scarcity and my Biology work on nutrient cycling both pointed the same way: single-discipline answers keep running out early. I am realistic that interdisciplinary study means tolerating unfamiliar methods, including statistics and modelling I will find harder than fieldwork. That prospect appeals to me. I would rather spend three years learning to move between evidence types than become fluent in only one.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

I am studying Geography, Biology and Maths at A level, a combination I chose deliberately rather than by elimination. Geography has given me the habit of asking about scale: my coursework on river channel efficiency along a local brook taught me how differently a catchment behaves depending on where you choose to measure it. Biology supplies the mechanisms, particularly the ecology and biochemistry units on carbon and nitrogen cycling, which explained things I had observed on the allotment without understanding, such as why fresh grass clippings stalled my compost. Maths has been the most useful for the course I am applying to, even though it is the subject I find most demanding. Working through statistics, particularly hypothesis testing and correlation, changed how I read environmental claims; I now look for sample sizes and confounding variables before I look at the conclusion. For my Extended Project I investigated whether soil organic matter differed between three plots on our allotment site that had been managed differently, using loss-on-ignition tests supervised by my Biology teacher. My results suggested a difference, but the strongest part of the project was the section where I explained why my sampling design could not rule out underlying variation in the site's original soil. My teacher's feedback was that the limitations discussion was the most scientific writing I had produced. I also take part in the sixth form's debating group, which has improved my ability to summarise a position I do not hold accurately before responding to it.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

Since Year 12 I have worked Saturdays and school holidays at a garden centre, mainly on the outdoor plants section and tills. The job involves a lot of straightforward physical work, but it has also taught me how people actually make decisions about the environment. Customers frequently ask for peat-free compost, then hesitate when they see the price difference, and I have learned to explain the trade-offs without lecturing anyone. Handling returns of plants that died within a fortnight has made me sceptical of solutions that depend on households doing everything correctly. With a friend I helped organise a clothes-swap event at school, which we ran twice. Our contribution was modest and practical: we booked a room, sorted donations into sizes, wrote the notices and kept a tally of items taken. About ninety garments changed hands over the two events, and roughly a quarter were left over, which we took to a charity shop. Splitting the work meant I mostly handled the tallying and the leftovers, and that is what I would report honestly if asked what I did. Outside school I run a small vegetable patch and keep my compost records, including a failed attempt at a wormery which taught me more about moisture balance than the successful bins did. I also help with my younger brother's after-school pickups two days a week, which has made me organised about deadlines because I simply cannot leave work until late evening. I am used to fitting study around fixed commitments and expect that skill to carry into a demanding degree.
