Why do you want to study this course or subject?

In Biology I learned how a vaccine trial is structured; in History I learned how a government decides which advice to publish. What interests me is the space between those two things. A result can be robust and still be ignored, misread or used to argue the opposite of what it shows, and that gap seems to me a proper object of study rather than simply a failure of communication. I want a degree that treats it that way, combining scientific content with sociology, history and policy analysis instead of asking me to choose one.

My reading pushed me in this direction. Ben Goldacre's Bad Science taught me to look at how a claim was produced before arguing about whether I agree with it, and I was struck by how often the problem lay in reporting and incentives rather than in deliberate dishonesty. Reading about the Windscale fire and later nuclear controversies for a History essay showed me that public scepticism is often a reasonable response to a record of official reassurance, not an absence of understanding. I now find the idea that people simply need more facts unconvincing, and I want to study the evidence behind that.

Questions I would like to work on include how uncertainty is expressed in official advice, who is consulted before a technology is introduced, and why some risks attract sustained attention while others do not. A cross-disciplinary course appeals because those questions need statistics and interviews, laboratory understanding and archival work. I expect to find the mixture demanding, and that is part of the attraction.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

My A levels give me three useful habits. Biology supplies the technical grounding: I have written up experimental work on enzyme activity and osmosis, learned to describe controls and limitations honestly, and covered immunology and genetics in enough depth to follow public debates about screening or vaccination without relying on summaries. Handling data in practical write-ups also made me more careful about small samples and about drawing conclusions from a single class set of results.

History has trained me in sources. For coursework I compared newspaper coverage and government statements on a twentieth-century public health campaign, using the college library's microfilm and online archives. I had to weigh what each source was for, who was expected to read it, and what was left out, which is closely related to analysing science coverage now. English Literature has improved how I read closely and how I write: I am better at noticing where a text hedges, generalises or appeals to authority, and at building an argument that acknowledges the strongest objection to it.

Alongside lessons I joined the college's debating society, where I twice spoke on motions about regulating new technologies and had to argue a position I did not initially hold. Preparing those cases taught me to separate an empirical disagreement from a disagreement about values, a distinction I keep returning to. I also took a short free online course on statistics for the media, which introduced me to relative versus absolute risk and made newspaper health stories much more interesting to read critically.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

For the past year I have volunteered most Saturdays as a gallery helper at a small science centre. My role is simple: I reset the exhibits, check that instruction cards are in place and answer visitors' questions, passing anything technical to the staff demonstrators. Standing beside the same electricity display for hours taught me more about public understanding of science than any single lesson. Adults often apologised before asking a question, as though curiosity needed an excuse, while children asked the awkward, useful things directly. I began noticing which labels were skipped and which were read aloud, and I mentioned to a staff member that visitors rarely reached the final panel of one display; she explained how constraints on space and funding shape what a centre can explain.

In the summer I spent a supervised week shadowing the communications team at a public health charity. I sat in on a planning meeting, read draft leaflets and helped compile a simple spreadsheet of media coverage from a list I was given. My tasks were minor and I was there to observe, but I saw staff argue over whether a figure was clear enough for a general reader and decide to add a sentence about what the evidence did not yet show. That care over wording, done without any expectation of praise, stayed with me.

My paid job at a garden centre involves weekend shifts on the tills and restocking, and it has made me steadier under pressure and more patient with people who are frustrated. I also help with the shopping and paperwork for a neighbour who no longer drives, which has made me think about who is actually reached by public information campaigns. Together these commitments have taught me to manage my time and to keep listening before I conclude what someone misunderstands.
