Why do you want to study this course or subject?
My interest in sustainability began with something fairly unglamorous: weighing bin bags. In Year 12 our Geography teacher let a small group of us audit the food waste from the college canteen, and for three weeks we sorted, weighed and recorded what came back on plates and what never left the servery. What struck me was not the quantity, though it was more than I expected, but how much of the problem sat outside anyone's obvious control. The kitchen ordered to a forecast, the forecast came from timetables, the timetables changed, and the waste followed. I had assumed sustainability was mostly about persuading individuals to behave better. That fortnight taught me it is more often about how systems are designed, measured and paid for. I want to study Sustainability because it deals with exactly this awkward middle ground where environmental science meets economics, policy and human habit. Studying Geography and Biology has given me two useful but incomplete halves: I can explain carbon cycling and ecosystem services, and I can describe urban development pressures, but I cannot yet assess whether a proposed change actually reduces impact overall. I would like to learn life cycle assessment and carbon accounting properly, because in my Saturday job I hear claims about products almost every week and I rarely have the tools to test them. I am also drawn to the ethical side. Reading about the concept of just transition made me think harder about who bears the cost of environmental change locally, not only internationally. A degree that combines quantitative methods with policy and fieldwork suits how I think, and I hope eventually to work in sustainability reporting or local authority climate planning, where decisions are constrained and unavoidably practical.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
My A-levels in Geography, Biology and Business complement each other more closely than I expected when I chose them. Geography has been the strongest influence. I enjoyed the water and carbon cycles unit, which gave me the vocabulary to think about stores and flows rather than isolated events, and my independent investigation examined surface water runoff and permeable surfacing on two residential streets near my college, involving infiltration tests and land use mapping. Presenting uncertainty honestly in my conclusions was harder than collecting the data, and it improved how I write. Biology has supplied the detail underneath, particularly photosynthesis, nutrient cycling and the ecology fieldwork where we used quadrats and transects on a coastal dune system and learned why sampling design matters so much. Business has been the surprise. Studying costs, stakeholders and break-even analysis has made me more sceptical of sustainability proposals that ignore who pays, and I wrote a coursework piece on packaging decisions in food retail that used the same framing. Alongside taught content I read fairly widely. Mike Berners-Lee's How Bad Are Bananas? was an accessible introduction to comparing footprints across very different activities, and it showed me how much depends on the boundaries you draw around a calculation. I also follow reporting on UK grid decarbonisation and enjoy looking at the daily generation mix data, which has made renewable intermittency feel concrete rather than abstract. I have kept my mathematics current through statistics in both Geography and Biology and I am comfortable with spreadsheets, correlation and graphing, which I know underpins the analytical modules on sustainability degrees.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
For just over a year I have worked Saturdays and school holidays at a large DIY and garden retailer, mostly on the customer service desk handling returns, orders and questions. Customer-facing work has taught me to explain things clearly under mild pressure and to stay calm with someone who is frustrated about a delayed delivery. It has also been unexpectedly relevant. I field regular questions about peat-free compost, water butts and insulation products, and I have learned that people often want to make a better choice but are put off by cost, confusing labels or uncertainty about whether it will work. That gap between intention and action is something I would like to understand academically. My team leader asked me to write a short crib sheet on peat-free compost questions for the weekend staff after I kept being called over, which is a small thing but it is now laminated by the till. Outside work I volunteer fortnightly with a community allotment and gardening club, where I help with composting, watering rotas and the autumn seed swap. I took on maintaining the club's planting record, replacing a folder of loose notes with a simple spreadsheet so we could see which beds had been used for what. It is basic record keeping, but it changed the crop rotation conversation we had in spring. I have also learned a lot from older members about soil, patience and the limits of enthusiasm. At college I was part of the group that took the food waste audit results to our senior leadership team, where I presented the measurement method. Two suggestions were adopted, including smaller portion options at the servery. Together these experiences have taught me that useful sustainability work is usually incremental, negotiated and dependent on decent data.
