Why do you want to study this course or subject?
The thing that made sustainability feel like a subject rather than a slogan was a set of cheap thermometers. I wanted to know why the walk home from college felt so much hotter along the main road than through the churchyard, so I bought four thermometers from a pound shop and started taking readings at the same three spots every afternoon. By the end of the summer the tarmac car park was consistently warmer than the shaded grass verge less than two hundred metres away, and I could see it in my own handwriting. That gap between two nearby places, created by decisions about surfaces and trees, is what I want to study properly.
Since then I have become interested in how sustainability questions refuse to stay in one discipline. Whether to plant street trees on my estate involves heat, drainage, root damage to pavements, maintenance budgets, and whether residents were asked. Reading Mike Berners-Lee's How Bad Are Bananas? changed how I think about comparison, because it shows that intuitions about which choices matter are often wrong until someone counts carefully, and that the boundaries you draw around a system shape the answer you get. I have also been following the Climate Change Committee's progress reports, which taught me that a target is only as useful as the delivery plan attached to it.
I am drawn to a degree that combines environmental science with policy and social research methods. I do not want to only measure things, and I do not want to only argue about them. The problems I find most interesting, like retrofitting cold housing or managing surface water in dense neighbourhoods, need someone who can read a dataset and also sit in a residents' meeting without losing patience. Studying sustainability at degree level seems the clearest route into that kind of work, and I would like to spend the next three years getting much better at both halves of it.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
Geography A level has given me the backbone of my preparation. Our unit on the water and carbon cycles taught me to think in stocks and flows rather than isolated events, which is the habit I rely on most when I read about emissions budgets. For my independent investigation I compared infiltration rates and surface runoff across three sites in a local park, digging in stakes and timing how long a measured volume of water took to soak away. The fieldwork was messier than the textbook suggested, my first set of readings was unusable because I had not standardised how firmly I pushed the ring into the soil, and repeating it properly taught me more about method than any mark scheme.
Biology contributes the ecological side. Work on nutrient cycling, decomposition and population sampling has made me cautious about treating ecosystems as simple carbon stores, and practical transect work along a hedgerow showed me how quickly species composition changes with light and disturbance. Statistics has been unexpectedly useful for sustainability arguments. Learning about sampling bias, correlation and the limits of small samples made me much more honest about my own thermometer project, which has too few sites and no control for cloud cover to prove anything general. I now describe it as an observation that raised a question rather than a finding.
Outside lessons I completed the Open University's free introduction to environmental management, which introduced life cycle thinking and the idea that waste hierarchies are political as well as technical. I also attend a college climate reading group where we take turns summarising an article; presenting a piece on district heating forced me to explain infrastructure economics to people studying art and languages, and their questions exposed the parts I had only half understood. I am comfortable with quantitative work, essay writing and fieldwork, which I understand a sustainability degree will ask for in roughly equal measure.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
For the past two years I have helped run a community fridge that operates from my local library on Thursday evenings. Volunteers collect surplus food from two supermarkets and a bakery, sort it, and put it out for anyone who wants it. My job started as lifting crates and has grown into keeping the record sheet of what arrives and what is left over. Over time the sheet became genuinely informative: bread and bagged salad dominate the surplus, and salad is also what we throw away most often because it fails before anyone takes it. I suggested we put salad out first rather than last and note the temperature of the collection van, which slightly reduced our losses. It is a small thing, but it taught me that waste is usually a scheduling and storage problem before it is a moral one.
On Saturdays I work in a garden centre, mostly on tills and watering. Customers ask constantly about drought-tolerant planting, peat-free compost and whether wildflower seed mixes actually help pollinators. Answering honestly has meant learning where my knowledge stops, and I have read the RHS guidance on peat-free growing media so I can explain why results vary with watering habits rather than promising too much. The job has also given me practice at being useful in a busy place and at speaking to people who are sceptical.
At home I look after my younger brother and sister on weekday evenings, which means cooking, homework supervision and a fairly strict routine. It has made me organised out of necessity; I plan coursework around the hours I know I will actually have. It also gave me a domestic angle on energy. When our flat was fitted with a smart meter I started logging the weekly readings against the outside temperature, and the relationship was much less tidy than I expected, because how many of us were home mattered as much as the weather. That made abstract debates about heat demand feel concrete.
I swim twice a week at the leisure centre, which is where I do my clearest thinking, and I have recently started volunteering at monthly litter picks along the canal. Between them, these commitments have given me patience, a tolerance for repetitive measurement, and a genuine interest in the ordinary places where sustainability decisions land.
