Why do you want to study this course or subject?

The allotment site behind my old primary school had no usable plan. The association knew roughly where the plots were, but boundaries had drifted over thirty years and two people were sharing the same strip of ground without realising. I offered to measure it properly over the summer, which is how I discovered that measurement is not a neutral act: where I chose to put my baseline, and how carefully I closed my traverse, decided whose shed was inside whose plot. That responsibility interested me far more than I expected, and it is why I want to study Surveying rather than Geography alone.

What attracts me is the combination of precision and consequence. A survey is a claim about the world that other people then build on, borrow against or argue over. I like that surveyors have developed formal ways of admitting uncertainty, closing errors and distributing them rather than pretending a measurement is exact. Reading about levelling and traversing showed me that the discipline is honest about its own limits in a way I find unusual.

I am also drawn to the range of work the degree leads towards: setting out on site, monitoring how structures and ground move, land and boundary work, and the increasing use of laser scanning and drone photogrammetry to record places quickly. I would like to understand the theory behind the instruments properly, so that when a total station or a point cloud gives me a figure I can judge whether to trust it. Working outdoors matters to me too. I do not want a job where I never see the ground I am describing.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

I am studying Geography, Mathematics and Product Design at A level. Geography has given me the grounding in landforms, hydrology and GIS that surveying builds on; my coursework investigation compared river channel cross-sections upstream and downstream of a road bridge, which taught me how quickly sloppy field technique ruins an otherwise sensible research design. My first set of depth readings was unusable because I had not fixed a consistent datum along the bank, and I repeated the whole exercise.

Mathematics is the subject I lean on most. Trigonometry, coordinate geometry and the statistics unit on correlation and error all appear directly in surveying, and I have enjoyed the mechanics work on resolving forces because it made me think about why structures are monitored at all. I practise the trigonometry beyond the syllabus by setting myself small problems from my own measurements, such as calculating a tree height from a measured baseline and two angles, then checking it against a second method.

Product Design has been unexpectedly useful. Working to tolerances, producing dimensioned drawings and thinking about how an object is actually assembled has made me careful about scale and conventions. In Year 11 I took a construction link course at a local college, covering site safety, basic setting out and the reading of floor plans and elevations, which gave me my first proper look at how a drawing turns into a building.

Alongside lessons I have read Ordnance Survey material on the national grid and the difference between ellipsoidal and orthometric height, which clarified why a GPS height is not the height a builder needs. I follow surveying discussion online and have watched instrument manufacturers' training videos on setting up over a station.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

The allotment project ran across two summers. I had no access to professional instruments, so I worked with a 30 metre tape, a builder's line, a prismatic compass borrowed from my college's geography department and a phone GPS app. I set out a closed traverse around the perimeter, took offsets to the plot boundaries and hedges, and averaged repeated GPS fixes at four corners to give me something approximating real coordinates. My first traverse failed to close by nearly two metres, which forced me to learn about compass errors near the metal fencing and to re-measure with a chained baseline instead. The final drawing, produced in a free CAD package, is now pinned up in the association shed and was used to settle the overlapping plots. It is not a legal boundary survey and I was careful to say so.

On Saturdays and in the holidays I work at a garden centre, mostly on the tills and moving stock. It has taught me to stay pleasant when someone is frustrated, to handle money accurately and to work steadily through a long shift in cold weather. Last winter I helped mark out the positions for new display bays, which involved squaring off from the building line with a tape and a 3-4-5 triangle.

I am a member of my college's walking group and have taken on responsibility for route planning, including grid references, bearings and timings using Naismith's rule. Navigating in poor visibility on the Peak District moors has made me confident with a map and compass and realistic about how fast conditions change outdoors.

At home I share the school run and after-school care for my younger brother two days a week, which has made me organised about time. I am comfortable with early starts, long days and being the person who checks the figures twice.
