Personal statement example
My interest in geodesy grew out of a fairly practical problem. In the second year of my Geography degree I took an optional module in geospatial analysis, and one of the exercises involved comparing tide gauge records with nearby benchmark heights. The two told slightly different stories, and it became clear that the difference was not measurement error to be tidied away but the ground itself moving. From that point the reference frame stopped being background information and became the interesting part of the question.
My degree gave me a reasonable base to build on. Alongside the physical geography core I chose modules in quantitative methods, remote sensing and GIS, and I taught myself enough Python to stop relying on spreadsheets. I found least squares adjustment genuinely satisfying once I understood it as a way of distributing inconsistency honestly rather than hiding it, and I went back over my first-year statistics notes to make sure I properly understood covariance and error propagation rather than just applying formulae. I also took a module in geophysics, which gave me a working picture of glacial isostatic adjustment and why the geoid is not a sphere or an ellipsoid.
My dissertation was the most sustained piece of work I have done. I looked at vertical land movement around a Welsh estuary using publicly available continuous GNSS time series, comparing them with historic levelling heights and published GIA model output. Most of the effort went into unglamorous things: understanding which reference frame each dataset was expressed in, handling gaps and antenna changes in the time series, and being careful about what a trend fitted to nine years of data could and could not support. My conclusion was modest, a small ongoing subsidence signal consistent with regional expectations, but I learned a great deal about the difference between a number and a defensible number. Writing the uncertainty section taught me more than the analysis itself.
Throughout my degree I worked weekends and holidays on the checkouts and later in stock control at a supermarket. It funded my studies and it also taught me things that transfer better than I expected: working steadily through a task under time pressure, explaining problems clearly to people who are busy, and noticing when a recorded figure and the physical reality do not match. I also volunteer twice a month with a group that surveys and maintains a stretch of coastal footpath, which has involved a lot of tape measures, GPS handhelds and arguments about where the eroding edge actually is. It is a useful reminder that measurement happens in weather, on slopes, with imperfect equipment.
What I want from postgraduate study is the rigour I know my background lacks. I have read enough to understand the shape of the field, including introductory treatments of physical geodesy and satellite gravimetry, but I have not been formally taught adjustment computations, geodetic reference systems or space geodetic techniques to the depth the subject requires. I would particularly like to work on height systems and the relationship between geometric and physical heights, since that is where my dissertation ran out of competence.
In the longer term I would like to work in national mapping, coastal monitoring or the survey side of infrastructure, where accurate positioning has direct consequences for decisions about flooding and land use. A taught masters in geodesy is the honest route from where I am to that work, and I am prepared for the mathematics it will demand.
