Why do you want to study this course or subject?

For four years I have opened up a council leisure centre at six in the morning, and the same questions come at me across the desk before the kettle has boiled: why has my knee started aching since I began running, how much protein do I actually need, is it too late to get fitter at sixty. I could give a reasonable answer to some of these and a vague one to most. That gap between what I had picked up on the job and what I could genuinely explain is what pushed me back into education. I want to understand the physiology underneath the advice rather than repeating what sounds sensible. What draws me to sport science specifically is that it sits across several disciplines at once. A rugby player's recurring hamstring problem might be a matter of muscle architecture, of how they accelerate, of training load across a fortnight, or of sleeping badly because of shift work. I find it satisfying that answering the question properly means moving between biomechanics, physiology and psychology rather than staying in one. Studying anatomy and biology at college has shown me how much detail I was missing: I had no idea how much of endurance improvement happens in the mitochondria and the capillary bed rather than the lungs. In the longer term I am interested in exercise physiology applied to ordinary adults, particularly rehabilitation and the sort of population that uses a municipal gym rather than a performance centre. Whether that leads to clinical exercise practice or further study, I want a degree that will let me test ideas properly instead of guessing.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

I am studying an Access to Higher Education Diploma in Science at my local college, taking Human Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics alongside a study skills unit. Returning to formal study at thirty after A-levels in Geography, Business Studies and PE was not straightforward; I had to relearn how to revise and how to write in an academic register. Chemistry has been the hardest and most useful of the three, because thinking about energy and reaction pathways has made cellular respiration far less abstract. For my extended biology assignment I wrote about the physiological adaptations that follow a period of endurance training, comparing central changes such as stroke volume with peripheral changes in the muscle, which forced me to read beyond the textbook and to judge how strongly different studies supported their claims. Maths has made me more careful with data. I had used spreadsheets at work without thinking much about what an average was hiding, and working through standard deviation and correlation has changed how I read fitness statistics, including the ones printed on posters in my own workplace. My tutor's feedback early in the year was that I described findings without interrogating them, so I began keeping a notebook where I write one paragraph on each paper or article I read, summarising the method and the weakness. I also completed the level three gym instructing qualification two years ago, which introduced basic anatomy and programme design and gave me the first proper sense that I wanted to study this subject in depth rather than in outline.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

At the leisure centre I take bookings, run inductions and supervise the gym floor. Inductions taught me to explain the same idea in several ways depending on who is in front of me: a nervous first-timer recovering from a hip replacement needs something different from a teenager who wants to bench press immediately. I have also learned to notice when someone is doing too much too soon, and to raise it tactfully rather than lecturing. Before this I delivered post for five years, which gave me a stubborn work ethic and the habit of getting through something unglamorous in bad weather, and I still walk or cycle the six miles to college for the same reason. On Sunday mornings I help coach an under-thirteens rugby league team. I plan warm-ups, run small-sided games and manage substitutions so everyone plays. Coaching children has been the clearest test of communication I have had, because a drill that is badly explained falls apart within seconds. It has also made me think about growth and maturation, since two boys of the same age can differ enormously in size and coordination, and about how differently they respond to encouragement. I keep a training log of my own running, recording distance, perceived effort and resting heart rate, and last winter I followed a twelve-week half marathon plan, which gave me a first-hand sense of how gradual progression and recovery weeks feel rather than just how they look on paper. Balancing shifts, college deadlines and coaching has made me organised out of necessity, and I am used to studying in the evening after a long day.
