Why do you want to study this course or subject?

In PE we spent three weeks on energy systems, and I remember being surprised that the tiredness I felt at the end of an 800m had a name, a timescale and a measurable cause. I had always thought of training as something you simply did more of. Learning that adaptation depends on specific, dose-dependent stress made me want to understand the mechanisms properly rather than repeat what coaches tell each other at the side of a track. My own recovery from a stress fracture in my shin sharpened that interest. I was given exercises to rebuild strength, and I wanted to know why loading bone helps it remodel, why my calf had lost so much size in six weeks, and why walking felt harder than it should. Reading around this led me to physiology textbooks in the college library and then to material on bone loading and detraining, and I found I enjoyed the numbers as much as the anatomy. What draws me to exercise science specifically, rather than a coaching or therapy route, is the measurement side: designing a test that actually answers a question about a person's capacity, and knowing what the result cannot tell you. I am interested in how laboratory measures such as VO2 max or lactate thresholds relate, often imperfectly, to how someone performs or feels in ordinary life. I would like to study physiology, biomechanics and research methods together, because I have noticed that arguments about training in the athletics club usually come down to evidence nobody has actually checked. Longer term I am considering work in physical activity and health, particularly with older adults, but I want a degree that keeps both performance and health applications open while I decide.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

Biology has given me the most useful foundation. Respiration, the cardiovascular system and homeostasis all reappear in exercise physiology, and the practical work taught me to be careful about variables: our enzyme investigation only made sense once we controlled temperature properly. I have also become more confident with statistics through Biology and Psychology, where I learned to choose tests, interpret significance and recognise when a sample is too small to support a claim. Psychology has been unexpectedly relevant. Studying research methods showed me how easily expectation shapes a result, which matters in exercise research where participants usually know what condition they are in. Topics on motivation and adherence made me think about why so many people start training programmes and stop, which seems as important a problem as improving performance by a few per cent. A level PE covers biomechanics, physiology and skill acquisition, and my coursework involved analysing my own 800m performance and planning an intervention. I chose to focus on pacing, collected split times over several sessions and found my first lap was consistently too fast. Presenting that analysis taught me to be honest about weak data: I had few trials and no control over conditions, and I said so. Beyond the syllabus I read Alex Hutchinson's Endure, which I found useful for how it treats fatigue as involving the brain as well as the muscles rather than only one or the other. I also follow a couple of research summary blogs, which have taught me to look for sample size and study design before accepting a headline. Chemistry would have helped, and I have been working through introductory material on metabolism independently to prepare.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

Two afternoons a week I help my grandmother, who has arthritis in both knees. I do her shopping, take her to appointments and walk with her to the local shops when she feels able. This has shaped how I think about physical activity more than anything else I have done. Her prescribed exercises are simple, but doing them consistently when movement is uncomfortable is genuinely difficult, and I have seen how much difference a small amount of walking makes to her confidence on stairs. It has made me sceptical of advice that ignores pain, routine and mood. On Saturdays I volunteer at a junior athletics club, mostly setting up equipment, timing sprints and supervising warm-ups for children aged eight to eleven. I am not a coach, but timing sessions has taught me practical things about measurement: where you stand, when you start the watch, and how much variation comes from the timer rather than the runner. I have also learned to explain the same instruction three different ways until it lands. Last term I helped organise the group of younger children at a small inter-club event, which meant keeping twenty restless children calm and in the right place at the right time. My supermarket job involves early shifts before college, stock rotation and dealing with customers who cannot find things. It has made me reliable about time and reasonably patient. Balancing it with caring responsibilities and coursework has forced me to plan properly; I use a weekly timetable and protect specific study blocks, which I expect to be useful at university. I play in a five-a-side team, which I keep purely for enjoyment, and I have started running again on a structured programme that builds load gradually, which I now understand rather than just follow.
