Personal statement example

My interest in reproductive biology grew out of a third-year module on endocrinology, where the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis was presented as a control system with feedback loops, thresholds and a finite resource at one end. What struck me was how much of the ovarian story is decided before birth, and how little clinical influence we have over the pace at which that reserve declines. I began reading around follicular development and found the distinction between the growing follicle pool and the resting primordial pool more interesting than anything else on my degree. A master's in reproductive biology is the natural place to take that interest further, particularly the cellular and endocrine basis of ovarian ageing.

My final-year project involved immunohistochemical staining of bovine ovarian tissue sections to compare the distribution of granulosa cell markers across follicles at different stages. Practically, it taught me more than any earlier module: I spent a frustrating fortnight troubleshooting high background staining before adjusting my blocking step and antibody dilution, and I learned to keep a lab book that someone else could follow. Counting and classifying follicles under the microscope also made me cautious about my own data. Sections do not always cut cleanly through a follicle, and classification depends on judgement, so I ran a blind recount of a subset of my slides and reported the disagreement rate in my write-up rather than presenting the first set of numbers as final. My supervisor's comment that a stated limitation is worth more than a tidy graph has stayed with me.

Alongside my degree I have worked part-time as a healthcare assistant in a community clinic. The work is ordinary: preparing rooms, chaperoning, taking heights and weights, reassuring people who are anxious about routine tests. What it has given me is a sense of how reproductive health is actually discussed. I have sat with women who were embarrassed to ask basic questions about their cycles, and with couples who had clearly been given a lot of statistics and very little explanation. It has made me careful about language. If I go on to work in fertility research or an andrology or embryology laboratory, I want to be able to explain what a result does and does not mean without either overstating certainty or leaving someone in the dark.

I also help care for my grandmother two evenings a week, managing her medication timetable and taking her to appointments. It is not dramatic, but it has taught me to plan my week honestly and to keep working steadily when time is tight. Balancing shifts, caring evenings and a laboratory project meant I had to get organised rather than rely on last-minute effort, which I think is reasonable preparation for a taught master's with a substantial research component.

My reading beyond the curriculum has included work on primordial follicle activation and on the practicalities of ovarian tissue cryopreservation for patients facing gonadotoxic treatment. I am aware that I understand the outline rather than the detail, and that is precisely what I want to correct: I would like formal grounding in gametogenesis, implantation, reproductive endocrinology and the assisted reproduction technologies, together with better statistical and experimental design skills than my undergraduate degree gave me.

In the longer term I hope to work in a clinical embryology or reproductive research setting, and possibly towards a PhD if a project on ovarian reserve arises. For now, I want a year of concentrated study in a field I have been circling for three years, and the laboratory discipline to contribute properly to it.
