Personal statement example
My interest in the cardiovascular system became specific rather than general during a second-year physiology module, when we were asked to explain why two patients with the same blood pressure reading might have very different risk. Working through the relationship between stroke volume, arterial compliance and pulse pressure made me realise that the heart is only half of the story, and that the vessels it pumps into determine much of what actually happens to a person. Since then I have chosen the cardiovascular option wherever my degree allowed, and I now want to study the field properly rather than as one strand among many.
My final-year project gave me my first real experience of cardiovascular measurement. Within a small student cohort study, I recorded resting ECGs and brachial blood pressure before and after a submaximal step test, then examined how heart rate recovery in the first minute related to self-reported weekly activity. The results were modest and the sample was small, but the process taught me a great deal: how much electrode placement and skin preparation affect trace quality, why I needed strict rest periods before baseline readings, and how easily an outlier can be created by a cuff that is the wrong size. I learned to document deviations honestly rather than quietly discarding them, and my write-up spent as much time on limitations as on findings. It was marked in the low seventies, which I was pleased with, and the feedback praised my handling of the confounding variables.
Alongside my degree I have worked in a garden centre café for three years, latterly as a shift supervisor. It is not laboratory work, but it has built habits I rely on: keeping accurate temperature and cleaning records, training new staff in procedures they cannot skip, and staying calm when a queue builds and a till fails. Explaining an allergen policy clearly to an anxious customer is, in a small way, the same skill as explaining a procedure to a study participant who is nervous about having electrodes attached.
Volunteering with a community running club has shaped my thinking more than I expected. I help set up the weekly sessions, marshal, and run with the slowest group so that nobody finishes alone. Many of our members joined after being advised to become more active, some following cardiac rehabilitation, and I have listened to them describe how daunting exercise felt at first. I completed a basic life support course through the club and now help check that a trained first aider is present at each session. Seeing how differently people respond to the same generic advice has made me interested in the gap between population-level risk factors and individual physiology, and in why exercise capacity predicts outcomes so stubbornly well.
My reading has followed these questions. Guyton and Hall's account of cardiac output regulation remains my reference point for pressure-volume relationships, and I have worked through introductory material on vascular biology and endothelial function, which is the area I would most like to develop. I would welcome structured teaching in cardiovascular imaging, haemodynamic measurement and research methods, and a project where I can design something more carefully than my undergraduate work allowed.
In the longer term I hope to work in cardiovascular research, ideally in a role that combines physiological measurement with clinical populations, and to keep developing the statistical skills I found both difficult and satisfying. Postgraduate study is the step that would let me move from broad biomedical training to genuine competence in one system.
