Why do you want to study this course or subject?

We were given four ex-commercial hens by a neighbour when I was fourteen, and looking after them taught me more about biology than I expected. They arrived with ragged feathers and no interest in the run, and within a few months they were laying well and bullying the cat. Watching that change made me curious about what a bird actually needs, rather than what we assume it needs: how much protein, how much space, how much light in winter, and what it costs a farmer to provide it. Poultry science appeals to me because it sits where physiology, nutrition and practical economics meet. Eggs and chicken meat are the cheapest animal protein most households in Britain buy, so decisions about feed formulation, housing design or disease control affect an enormous number of birds and a large part of the food supply at the same time. I am interested in how welfare improvements are measured and argued for, since keel bone damage and feather pecking are problems that good management can reduce but not simply wish away. My A level Chemistry has made me want to understand nutrition properly at the level of amino acids and calcium metabolism, not just as a list of ingredients on a feed bag. I would like a degree that lets me work with real flocks and real data, and that leads to work in the industry advising producers rather than only writing about it.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

Biology has given me most of the groundwork. The modules on gas exchange, digestion and homeostasis are the ones I return to most, and I have found comparing avian and mammalian systems genuinely useful, particularly the one-way airflow through avian lungs and air sacs and the absence of a bladder. Chemistry supports this: titrations and ideas about equilibrium and solubility helped me understand why calcium availability, not just calcium quantity, matters to a laying hen. Geography has been less obvious but valuable, because units on food security and agricultural systems made me think about poultry production as part of trade, land use and land pressure rather than as an isolated farm decision. For my Extended Project Qualification I investigated why the brown eggs from our own hens vary in colour and shell quality. I recorded shell colour against a printed reference chart, measured shell thickness using a digital micrometre on cleaned dried fragments, and logged the hen's age and the outside temperature over eleven weeks. The variation I found was mostly explained by hen age, which matched the literature I read on protoporphyrin deposition and shell thinning in older layers, but my sample was small and I could not separate temperature from season. Writing up the limitations honestly was the part I learned most from, and it has made me keen to do laboratory and statistics work at degree level rather than rely on rough measurements.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

At my local young farmers' club I helped start a poultry and small livestock section, which now meets monthly and has about a dozen regular members. I organise the meetings, book speakers where I can and write the notices. Persuading a vet nurse to come and talk about respiratory disease and biosecurity took several attempts and a lot of polite emails, and thirty people came. I also prepare younger members for the club's poultry showing and handling classes, teaching them to hold a bird calmly and check its condition, and two of them placed in their age group at the county show last summer, which felt like a better result than anything I have won myself. On Saturdays I work on the deli and egg counter at a farm shop. Customers ask constantly about free range, organic and what the date codes mean, and I have had to learn to give an accurate answer in a few sentences without either dismissing the question or lecturing. It is also physically steady work: stocktaking, rotating eggs, checking for cracks and dealing with the occasional complaint. At home I look after the flock, including clearing out the coop, dusting for mites and keeping our records of feed use and daily lay numbers, which I started as part of my project and have continued because the pattern over a year is interesting in itself. Long weekends and early mornings do not put me off this work.
