Why do you want to study this course or subject?
My Saturday job is in the farm shop and small creamery at a dairy farm four miles from my house, and most of what I now want to study started with questions I asked there. The cheesemaker told me that one week's curd had set differently because the cows had moved onto fresh grazing, and that casein levels shift with diet, stage of lactation and breed. I had assumed milk was a fairly fixed product. Learning that it is a biological fluid that changes daily, and that people manage those changes deliberately, made me look at the tanker collection in a completely different way.
Since then I have read about somatic cell counts, mastitis and the trade-offs between yield and milk solids, and I have found the combination appealing because it sits where animal biology, chemistry and practical decision-making meet. In Biology I enjoyed the endocrine topics most, particularly how hormonal control underpins lactation, and in Chemistry I liked the work on proteins and emulsions far more than I expected. Dairy science pulls these strands together and adds the parts I cannot learn from a textbook: nutrition, genetics, welfare, processing and the economics that constrain all of it.
I am also drawn to the industry's current problems rather than a romantic idea of farming. Questions about methane, antibiotic use, slurry management and how a small processor stays viable are genuinely difficult, and I would rather train to contribute technical judgement to them than have opinions from the sidelines. I would like eventually to work in herd health advisory or milk quality, and a science degree seems the honest route in.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
My A-levels are Biology, Chemistry and Geography, and each has contributed something I expect to use. Biology has given me the physiology and genetics foundation: my coursework on the effect of temperature on enzyme activity taught me more about controlling variables and writing up honestly than any single lesson did, and I now understand why pasteurisation conditions are specified so precisely. Chemistry has been the harder subject for me and the one I have improved most in, mainly through working through past questions on equilibria and organic mechanisms until the reasoning became familiar rather than memorised. I can now read a label on a milk analysis report and understand what fat, protein and lactose percentages actually describe.
Geography has been an unexpectedly useful third subject. Studying soils, water quality and catchment management gave me vocabulary for arguments I had heard locally about run-off and nutrient loss, and our fieldwork on a small river, taking turbidity and nitrate readings at several points, showed me how messy real environmental data is compared with a graph in a workbook.
Outside the syllabus I have been reading around farming systems, including sections of an introductory animal nutrition text borrowed from the college library, and I follow the technical articles in the farming press that our shop keeps in the staff room. I have also taught myself to use spreadsheets properly for the shop's stock figures, which has made me more comfortable with the idea of handling herd records and production data as part of a degree.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
At the farm shop I serve customers, restock the chiller and help with cleaning and packing in the creamery. I have learned the discipline of hygiene procedures, why the wash cycle on the bulk tank matters, and how a small business loses a batch if something is a degree out. When it is quiet I ask questions, and the herdsman has let me watch parlour routines several times, including foremilking and teat disinfection. I would not claim to be able to milk a herd myself, but I understand the order of the job and why consistency protects both the cow and the milk.
At home I share caring responsibilities. I collect my younger brother from school three days a week and sit with my grandmother two evenings while my mum works a late shift, cooking and helping her with her medication timings. It is ordinary, but it has made me reliable about time and calm when plans change, and it taught me to notice small differences in how someone is doing before they are mentioned. That habit of unhurried observation feels relevant to livestock work.
Through Young Farmers' Club I have taken part in stock judging practice, where you must justify a placing out loud, which improved my ability to explain reasoning under mild pressure. I helped steward a gate and count entries at our county show last summer. I also play in a netball team on Sundays, which I keep up because it clears my head and because I like being answerable to other people for turning up. Together these commitments have made me used to long weeks, and I am ready for the practical demands of a dairy course.
