Personal statement example

My final-year project was the point at which plant disease stopped being a set of lecture slides and became something I had to reason about. I grew wheat seedlings at three sowing densities and inoculated them with a seed-borne Fusarium isolate, scoring seedling blight over four weeks. My results were untidy: the disease index rose with density, as expected, but one tray contradicted the trend, and my supervisor encouraged me to treat that as data rather than an embarrassment. Re-checking my records showed that tray had been watered from a different can and had drained badly. Writing up the limitations taught me more than the significant result did, particularly about how easily the environment in a glasshouse becomes an uncontrolled variable, and how much disease expression depends on conditions the pathogen does not control.

My degree gave me a broad foundation in microbiology, plant physiology and statistics, and I chose options in crop science and microbial ecology. I was most interested in the modules that dealt with host response, especially the difference between resistance that limits infection and tolerance that limits yield loss, since the second is far more useful to a grower than it sounds in a textbook. Reading around this, I found Agrios's Plant Pathology a useful anchor for classical concepts, but the more recent literature on managing fungicide resistance in Zymoseptoria tritici is what convinced me that plant pathology is an applied discipline under continual pressure. A diagnosis is only the first step; the recommendation that follows has to be affordable, legal and durable.

I spent a supervised week at a regional plant health advisory clinic, arranged through my department. My responsibilities were deliberately modest: booking samples in, photographing symptoms, labelling plates and tidying down at the end of the day. I was allowed to watch the diagnosticians work through submissions, and what struck me was how much of the process was interpretive rather than technical. One submission of blackcurrant leaves produced no pathogen at all, and the eventual explanation involved spray drift and waterlogging. Hearing the advisor draft a careful, hedged reply to the grower showed me that communicating uncertainty is part of the job. I also saw how much a clear sampling history from the grower was worth, which has changed how I would set up a survey.

My paid work is in a garden centre, where I answer customer questions about failing plants. Most of what I see is abiotic or cultural, but box blight, rose black spot and tomato blight come in regularly, usually as a photograph on a phone. Explaining hygiene, spacing and cultivar choice to someone standing in front of me, without jargon, is genuinely difficult and good practice. I also volunteer monthly at a community orchard, where I have helped with winter pruning and canker inspections on apple trees, and have learned how long-lived perennial hosts change the whole logic of disease management.

An MSc is the right next step because my undergraduate training left me competent at following protocols but not yet confident in designing diagnostics or interpreting epidemiological data. I want structured laboratory work in isolation, culturing and molecular identification, alongside quantitative epidemiology, and a research project with enough length to do a proper experiment rather than a rushed one. My longer-term aim is diagnostic and advisory work, ideally within a plant health service or a crop research organisation, where the questions come from people growing the crop. I would like to be useful to those people, and that requires training I do not yet have.
