Personal statement example

My interest in plant breeding grew out of something quite small: a row of tomato plants on my allotment, grown from seed I had saved from a supermarket fruit. The plants were wildly inconsistent, and working out why sent me reading about F1 hybrids, segregation and why uniformity is a deliberate achievement rather than a default. I have been saving and re-sowing from the best plants for three seasons now. I do not pretend this is breeding in any formal sense, as I have no controlled pollinations and no proper records beyond a notebook, but it taught me to look closely, to distinguish genetic differences from differences in soil and water, and to be patient with a question that only answers itself once a year.

My degree in Biological Sciences gave me the genetics and molecular biology underpinning the field. I took options in plant physiology and in genomics, and I was drawn to the point where the two meet: how a phenotype that a grower cares about, such as standing up to a dry spring, can be traced to particular loci and then selected for. For my final-year project I compared germination rate and early root architecture in two barley varieties under a reduced watering regime, scoring seedlings in rhizotrons over three weeks. The design was modest and my results were partly confounded by uneven germination in one tray, which I discussed honestly in my write-up. What I valued was the discipline of it: setting up a randomised layout, measuring the same thing the same way every time, and learning that careful trait measurement is often harder than the genetics that follows. I also worked in a pair during a laboratory module on plant tissue culture, where my partner and I established callus from carrot explants. We divided the work so that one of us prepared media while the other handled the sterile transfers, and we swapped roles halfway through so that both of us became competent at each stage. About a third of our cultures were lost to contamination, which was frustrating but instructive about how much of biotechnology is technique rather than theory.

Outside university I have spent two summers working on a family-run soft fruit farm, first in the packing shed and later in the polytunnels. Grading fruit for hours a day is repetitive, but it gave me a practical sense of what breeders are actually selecting for: shelf life, even ripening, fruit that does not bruise when handled by tired people at the end of a shift. I saw a variety trial there over one season and noticed how much the grower's judgement rested on picking speed and labour cost as well as yield. I also volunteer monthly at a community orchard, where an experienced member taught me whip-and-tongue grafting. My first attempts mostly failed; the two that took are now growing on, and I have since helped teach the technique to newer volunteers, which forced me to explain clearly why the cambium contact matters.

A master's is the sensible next step because my understanding of modern breeding is still largely read rather than practised. I want structured training in marker-assisted and genomic selection, in statistical analysis of field trial data, and in the regulatory and ethical questions around gene editing in crops, which I have followed in the coverage of recent changes to how precision-bred plants are treated in England. I am particularly interested in vegetable and soft fruit breeding, where breeding cycles are short enough to see the results of decisions and where traits valued by growers and by consumers do not always align.

Longer term I would like to work in a breeding programme, ideally on horticultural crops, contributing to trait evaluation and selection. I am comfortable with slow, careful, seasonal work, and I would rather build genuine competence in the techniques than collect an overview of them.
