Personal statement example

My interest in parasitology grew out of a second-year module on host-parasite interactions, where I was struck by how much of a parasite's biology is shaped by the need to move between hosts. The life cycle of Schistosoma, with its snail intermediate host and free-swimming larval stages, made me see transmission as an ecological problem as much as a clinical one. I chose my remaining options accordingly, taking immunology, medical microbiology and a course in epidemiology and statistics, and I finished my BSc in Biological Sciences with a 2:1 and a first for my research project.

That project involved screening archived rodent faecal samples from a departmental teaching collection for helminth eggs using a simple flotation and McMaster counting method. The laboratory work was slower and less glamorous than I expected: my first slides were so full of plant debris that counts were meaningless, and I spent a fortnight refining the flotation solution and settling time before the results became consistent. I learned to keep a working record of every adjustment, which made the write-up far easier, and I became comfortable with morphological identification keys, with calculating prevalence and mean intensity, and with presenting negative binomial-style aggregation in my data rather than assuming an even distribution across hosts. My supervisor's comment that aggregation is the rule rather than the exception in parasite burdens has stayed with me, and it is one of the reasons I want to study transmission dynamics in more depth.

Alongside my degree I have worked in a garden centre café for three years, and for the last eighteen months as a shift supervisor. It is not laboratory experience, but it has taught me things that transfer: managing a rota, handling food hygiene records and temperature logs, training new staff patiently, and keeping calm when a coach party arrives ten minutes before closing. The documentation side in particular has made me careful about protocols, and I am used to explaining unwelcome information to customers clearly and without fuss, which I suspect matters in any public-facing science role.

I also volunteer with a local river conservation group, doing kick-sampling and invertebrate identification for water quality surveys about once a month. Sorting a tray of freshwater invertebrates into families under a hand lens is good discipline for attention to detail, and it has given me a practical feel for the habitats that intermediate hosts occupy. Last spring I put together a short identification crib sheet for new volunteers, with photographs of the groups we most often confuse, and the group coordinator has kept using it since. It is a small thing, but I was pleased that something I made was genuinely useful to other people.

What I hope to gain from postgraduate study is a firmer grounding in the areas my undergraduate degree only introduced: protozoan and helminth systematics, vector biology, molecular diagnostics such as PCR and sequencing approaches for species identification, and the immunology of chronic infection. I am particularly interested in how diagnostic sensitivity affects prevalence estimates, since my own project showed how easily low-intensity infections are missed by microscopy alone. For a research project I would welcome anything involving field or archived sample collections combined with molecular confirmation of identity.

In the longer term I would like to work in a diagnostic or research laboratory concerned with parasitic disease, whether in veterinary, public health or ecological contexts. I am aware that this is a demanding, technically detailed field, but the parts of my degree I enjoyed most were the ones that required exactly that kind of patience, and I am keen to build on them properly.
