Personal statement example
My interest in fungi grew out of a project I thought would be about leaves. For my final-year dissertation I set up litter bags of birch and oak under three moisture regimes and measured mass loss over eleven weeks. The numbers behaved roughly as expected, but what held my attention was the material I pulled out of the bags: sheets of white mycelium binding the birch litter, and almost none in the driest treatment, where the leaves stayed skeletal and intact. I had been measuring an outcome and ignoring the organisms producing it. When I read around the topic afterwards, including sections of Boddy's work on wood decay communities, I found a literature far richer than the single decomposition rate I had reported, full of competitive interactions, territorial mycelial fronts and shifts in community composition over time. That gap between my tidy graph and the biology underneath it is why I want to study mycology properly.
My degree gave me a reasonable foundation. I took modules in microbiology, plant science, ecology and molecular techniques, and I am comfortable with sterile culture work, gel electrophoresis, PCR and basic sequence handling, as well as with R for analysis and plotting. My weakest area on graduating was fungal identification, which I have been working on since. I joined a local natural history group that records fungi, and over two autumns I have learned to use keys, take spore prints, notice smell and texture, and check gill attachment rather than guessing from cap colour. I have also learned how much I cannot identify confidently in the field, which has made me more interested in the molecular side of taxonomy and in why barcoding has reorganised so many familiar groups.
Since graduating I have worked part-time in the plant care team at a garden centre. The job is practical rather than scientific, but it has been unexpectedly useful. I deal with customers bringing in leaves spotted with rust or powdery mildew, seedlings collapsing from damping off, and houseplants killed by overwatering rather than disease. Explaining the difference between a pathogen and a cultural problem, to someone who mainly wants their plant to survive, has taught me to describe biology clearly and without overstating what I know. It has also given me a steady sense of fungi as agents in systems people care about, not only as study organisms.
Alongside work I share responsibility with my mother for helping an elderly neighbour with her shopping, prescriptions and hospital appointments. It is ordinary, mostly unremarkable, and it has shaped how I organise myself: I plan around fixed commitments, keep to arrangements, and have become better at asking for help rather than quietly falling behind. I managed my dissertation fieldwork in the same weeks as a run of appointments, and I finished on time because I built the schedule around them from the start.
For postgraduate study I would like to develop the skills to study fungal communities rather than just observe them: culturing from environmental samples, interaction assays between isolates, and metabarcoding to see what the plates do not show. In the longer term I am drawn to soil and wood decay ecology, particularly how fungal community composition affects carbon turnover in temperate woodland, and I would be glad to work towards a research career or an applied role in conservation or plant health. A taught master's is the stage I need next: more depth, better technique, and time in the company of people who already think about fungi seriously.
