Why do you want to study this course or subject?
The car park behind our college was resurfaced last summer, and the drainage still floods after heavy rain because the water has nowhere to go. Two streets away, the canal towpath holds the same rainfall without complaint, soaking it into verges and reed beds. Noticing that contrast is what pushed me towards landscape architecture rather than architecture alone: I am more interested in what happens between buildings than inside them, and in the fact that the ground itself can be designed to do work. I want to study a subject where planting, levels, water and people's habits are all part of the same drawing. Geography has given me the vocabulary for how places change and who gets left out of the change; Biology explains why a planting scheme succeeds or slowly fails; Art has taught me to look properly and to test an idea on paper before defending it. Landscape architecture seems to be the point where those three ways of thinking are genuinely useful at once. Reading Anne Whiston Spirn's The Granite Garden clarified this for me, particularly her argument that a city's air, water, soil and living things form a single system that design either works with or fights. I am realistic that much of the profession involves survey drawings, planting schedules, budgets and long consultations rather than sweeping visions, and that appeals to me. I would like to spend a career shaping ordinary places that people move through every day, in a climate that is becoming wetter in winter and hotter in summer.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
My A levels in Geography, Biology and Art & Design have shaped how I approach design problems. In Geography I have studied urban regeneration and river management, including a fieldwork investigation comparing infiltration rates on mown grass, bare compacted soil and an unmown verge in our local park. Measuring how differently three surfaces within fifty metres handled the same water made drainage feel like a design choice rather than an engineering afterthought. Biology has been valuable for understanding soils, plant physiology and succession; I now think about mature canopy size and root spread rather than how a shrub looks in its pot. Art & Design is where I develop ideas most freely. My current project explores boundaries, and I have been drawing hedges, railings and desire lines worn across grass, working in ink, collage and cut card models. I have learned to keep a sketchbook that records process honestly, including the versions that did not work. For my Extended Project I researched street tree planting in residential areas, looking at species selection, pit design and the disputes that arise over leaf fall and pavement damage. Writing it taught me to read technical guidance patiently and to accept that a good scheme must survive maintenance budgets and neighbours' objections. I have also taught myself the basics of SketchUp to test levels and shadow on a small sloping site, and I am steadily improving my hand-drawn sections.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
For the past eighteen months I have worked Saturdays and holidays at a garden centre, moving between the tills and the outdoor plant benches. Customer questions have been an unexpectedly good education: people arrive with a shaded north-facing strip or heavy clay and want something that will actually survive, so I have had to learn conditions, growth rates and seasons properly rather than by appearance. Handling stock through a cold spring also showed me how much timing and aftercare decide whether planting establishes. The work has made me calmer with people who are frustrated, and quicker at explaining a suggestion simply. I volunteer roughly monthly with a canal conservation club, clearing Himalayan balsam, repairing towpath edges and helping plant a small wildflower bank near a lock. Working alongside retired members who know every culvert on that stretch taught me how much local knowledge sits outside formal plans. At college I led the planting element of a courtyard improvement project run by our student council. I surveyed the sun and wind across the space over several weeks, costed a scheme of raised timber beds with herbs, ferns and a small amelanchier, and presented it to staff. The budget was cut, so I revised it into two phases; the first phase was built in March and the beds are now used at break times. Seeing my drawing standing up to real use, including a few things I would detail differently, confirmed what I want to do.
