Personal statement example
My interest in soil as an engineering material began with a coursework exercise that did not go to plan. We were asked to predict the settlement of a shallow foundation using parameters taken from a standard table, and my answer differed from my partner's by a factor of three because we had each picked a different plausible value for the compression index. The structural calculations I had done up to that point felt tidy by comparison. Geotechnics, I realised, is the part of civil engineering where the ground has to be persuaded to give up information, and where judgement about the quality of that information matters as much as the arithmetic. That is the part I want to spend my career on.
My final-year project grew out of the same curiosity. I looked at how repeated wetting and drying affected the shear strength of a clay taken from a cutting near my university, using a direct shear apparatus and samples remoulded at three different initial water contents. The work was modest in scope and the scatter in my results was larger than I would have liked, partly because I could only complete a limited number of cycles in the time available. What I gained was more useful than a clean graph: I learned to plan a testing programme around equipment availability, to keep records careful enough that a supervisor could challenge them, and to write about trends honestly when the data would not support a strong claim. My supervisor's comments on sample preparation changed how I now handle specimens at work.
Since graduating I have been an assistant technician in a materials testing laboratory. Most of my days involve concrete cubes, aggregate grading and moisture content determinations rather than soil mechanics, but the discipline has been valuable. I have become quick and accurate with standard procedures, I understand why calibration records and chain of custody matter, and I have seen how a site engineer's decision can rest on a single set of results produced under time pressure. I have also worked alongside a colleague to tidy up our internal method sheet for sieve analysis, mainly by rewriting the steps in the order they are actually carried out and adding photographs; it was a small contribution, but the newer staff find it easier to follow and fewer samples are being logged incorrectly.
Outside work I volunteer with a canal restoration group, where I have helped clear vegetation and rebuild sections of towpath. Watching an old embankment slump after heavy rain, and listening to the group's engineering adviser explain the likely drainage problem behind it, was a more memorable lesson in slope stability than any lecture slide. It has made me want to understand seepage and effective stress properly rather than as examinable formulae.
A master's is the natural next step because my undergraduate degree gave me only an introduction to critical state soil mechanics, ground investigation practice and numerical modelling, and these are the areas where I currently have to defer to others. I would like to strengthen my finite element skills, read more widely in unsaturated soil behaviour, and undertake a dissertation with a laboratory component so that I can build on my project rather than repeat it. In the longer term I hope to work as a geotechnical engineer on infrastructure earthworks and to progress towards chartership, contributing to the sort of ground investigation reports I currently only see the test results for.
