Personal statement example

My interest in energy law began with a planning file rather than a lecture. In my second undergraduate year I took a module on environmental and planning law and was asked to summarise the objections lodged against a proposed onshore wind development. What struck me was how many different legal languages were being spoken at once: landscape designations, noise conditions, grid connection agreements, community benefit funds and the national policy framework all pulling in different directions. I chose to write my dissertation on that tension, comparing how decision-makers weighed local amenity objections against national decarbonisation policy in a set of reported planning appeals. Reading the decision letters closely taught me more about how energy policy actually operates than any summary of it could.

Since graduating I have worked as a paralegal in a small commercial firm, mostly on contract reviews, lease assignments and Land Registry applications. The work is not glamorous, but it has been useful preparation. I have learned to read a long agreement for the clause that will cause trouble in five years, to keep a chronology that a supervisor can pick up cold, and to explain to a client why a deadline they consider arbitrary is not negotiable. I have also handled two files involving rooftop solar installations on commercial premises, which raised questions about who owned the equipment, who was entitled to the export payments, and what happened on assignment of the lease. Neither file was complicated, but both showed me how quickly ordinary property law runs into a regulatory regime I did not properly understand. That gap is a large part of why I am applying now.

Alongside work I volunteer as a general adviser at an advice centre, where a steady proportion of enquiries concern energy: billing disputes, prepayment meters, back-dated charges and confusion about which supplier is responsible after a transfer. I am not qualified to advise on regulatory obligations, so much of my role is establishing the facts, helping people write a clear complaint and referring them on. The pattern I notice is that the consumer protections often exist but are difficult for people to locate and slow to bite. I would like to understand the licensing and enforcement framework that sits behind those protections, and how regulatory discretion is actually exercised.

My reading has developed unevenly but genuinely. I have followed consultations and decisions published by the regulator on network charging and connections queues, and I read the trade press to keep track of contracts for difference allocation rounds. I found Barry Barton and colleagues' collection on energy security useful for showing how differently states define the term. I am now interested in the legal architecture of network access: who is entitled to connect, in what order, and how a queue of grid applications is made accountable. It seems to me an unglamorous question on which a great deal of the transition depends.

I share care of my grandmother with my mother, which shapes how I study. I work to fixed evening and weekend blocks and plan reading around them, and I have kept that pattern up for two years while working full time. Postgraduate study will demand more, but I know what I can sustain.

My aim after the programme is to practise in energy and infrastructure regulation, either in private practice or with a regulator or network operator. I want the technical grounding to do that work carefully rather than approximately.
