Why do you want to study this course or subject?
The tool store at my college's allotment took us eleven weeks and should have taken five. The design was fine; the sequencing was not. We ordered timber before we had levelled the base, so the boards sat under a tarpaulin in the rain for a fortnight, and we lost two Saturdays because the only person who knew how to use the mitre saw was away on a trip. Nobody had thought about who needed to be there, in what order, with what. That project taught me that the interesting problem in building something is rarely the thing itself, it is the arrangement of people, materials, money and time around it.
Working Saturdays on a trade counter has made that view sharper. I serve bricklayers, kitchen fitters and small contractors, and a surprising amount of what I hear is about programme rather than product: a plasterer waiting on a skip, a groundworker who cannot start because the client has not confirmed a specification. Delay costs them directly, and most of it traces back to decisions made weeks earlier by someone else. I want to be the person making those decisions well, which means understanding contracts, procurement and cost control alongside the technical side of how buildings go together.
Construction project management appeals to me because it sits between drawing and site. I enjoy detail and I am comfortable being the one who chases things, keeps a list and tells people news they do not want to hear. I would also like to work on retrofit and repair rather than only new build, because most of the buildings we will use in 2050 already exist and improving them is a harder scheduling problem than starting with an empty field.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
Maths and Physics have given me the quantitative grounding I expect to need. In Physics I have found moments and structural equilibrium the most useful topic so far, because it explains why a beam is sized as it is rather than treating that as a rule to memorise, and mechanics in Maths has overlapped with it usefully. I am strongest at the parts of Maths that involve setting up a problem clearly, and I have worked deliberately on presenting method rather than just answers, which has improved my marks in longer questions.
Design and Technology has been the subject where I have learned most about process. My coursework is a modular workbench for a school workshop, designed so that two people can move it and so that damaged sections can be replaced without scrapping the whole unit. Costing it honestly was the part that changed my thinking: my first material list came to roughly twice what a school department would sensibly spend, and reducing it meant changing joints and standardising component sizes rather than simply buying cheaper timber. I also produced a Gantt chart for my own build and, unlike with the allotment store, kept to it.
For my EPQ I wrote about whether modern methods of construction can reduce build times on small housing sites, reading contractor case studies and government reports on offsite manufacture. The most valuable outcome was learning to be sceptical of headline time savings that ignore design freeze dates and factory lead-in periods. I have also read Roger Flanagan and Norman Norman's writing on risk in construction in extract form through my college library, and Dan Cruickshank's writing on London's older buildings for pleasure, which is where my interest in existing stock began.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
I have worked Saturdays and school holidays on the trade counter at a builders' merchant for fourteen months. I take orders, price up small material lists, arrange deliveries and deal with returns and shortages. It has made me competent with technical vocabulary and unit pricing, and much better at telling a customer clearly that something will not arrive when they hoped. In my first months I twice booked deliveries without checking the yard stock properly; I now confirm availability before I promise a date, which sounds obvious but is the habit that has made customers trust me. My supervisor asked me to write the short crib sheet we use to train new weekend staff on the ordering system.
I am equipment officer for my canoe club, a volunteer role covering about forty boats, buoyancy aids and trailers. I run a termly inventory, log damage, and put together the repair list and a rough budget for the committee. Last winter I reorganised the store so that boats used by beginners are nearest the door and everything is labelled by group, which cut the time to load the trailer for a session from roughly forty minutes to twenty-five. It is small-scale asset management, and it has taught me that a system only works if the people using it find it easier than the alternative.
The allotment tool store remains the project I am proudest of, because we finished it and it is still standing. I took on ordering and sequencing after our slow start, drew up a simple weekly plan of who was needed and for what, and negotiated a discount on decking boards through contacts at work. Alongside this I coach at the canoe club's junior sessions, which involves explaining the same thing several different ways until it lands, and I help with weekly shopping and appointments for a neighbour, which has taught me to be reliable about time. I expect a construction degree to be demanding, and I am used to fitting study around commitments I have promised to keep.
