Why do you want to study this course or subject?
There is a half-built block of flats about ten minutes from my house that has not changed in two years. The hoardings are still up, the crane came down, and the local paper reported that costs had risen beyond what the developer expected. I kept thinking about how a building can be technically possible and still not get finished, and that the reasons are mostly financial rather than structural. That question of what makes a project viable, and who bears the risk when it is not, is what has pulled me towards construction economics rather than architecture or general economics.
In Economics I enjoyed topics on cost-benefit analysis and public goods most, particularly the way non-market effects such as noise, disruption and lost amenity are given monetary values so that they can be compared with construction costs. Geography gave me a different angle through urban regeneration case studies, where the same scheme can be described as investment or as displacement depending on who is asked. I have also read parts of the Government's Construction Playbook and found the emphasis on early cost certainty and whole-life value a useful corrective to my assumption that the cheapest tender is the best one.
I want a degree that combines measurement and judgement. Estimating quantities, forecasting inflation in material prices and preparing a cost plan appeal to the part of me that likes arithmetic with consequences, while contract administration and procurement seem to demand negotiation and clear writing. I am particularly interested in how the cost of retrofitting existing buildings compares with new build once carbon is taken into account, because the reuse project I volunteer with has made me sceptical of assuming that replacement is automatically better value.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
I am studying A levels in Mathematics, Economics and Geography, which between them cover most of the skills I expect to need. Mathematics has been the most demanding and the most useful: working through sequences, logarithms and the statistics units has made me comfortable with compound growth, which is the basis of understanding how price indices and interest rates affect a project budget over several years. I am not naturally quick at algebra, so I keep a folder of worked examples and redo past paper questions until I can explain each step aloud, which has steadily improved my accuracy.
In Economics I completed a coursework-style investigation into whether the Help to Buy scheme increased housing supply or mainly raised prices. Reading conflicting commentary taught me to look at what was actually being measured and over what period, and to be honest about the limits of the evidence I had. My teacher's feedback was that my conclusion was too cautious; I have since worked on taking a position while still acknowledging uncertainty, which I think is a reasonable balance for someone who may one day be advising on figures other people rely on.
Geography contributes fieldwork skills and an understanding of planning. For my independent investigation I surveyed land use and building condition along a high street undergoing partial redevelopment, recording frontage occupancy and interviewing shopkeepers about footfall. Designing the recording sheet so that two people would classify buildings the same way was harder than the analysis itself, and taught me something about why standard methods of measurement matter in construction too.
Outside the syllabus I have taught myself to use spreadsheets properly, including lookup functions and simple scenario modelling, after getting frustrated with doing repetitive calculations by hand. I also read the trade press when I can, mainly for stories about tender prices and insolvency in the supply chain.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
I work Saturdays and some school holidays on the trade counter at a builders' merchant. The job itself is ordinary: serving customers, pulling stock, checking delivery notes. What has been genuinely instructive is overhearing small builders discuss prices. I have watched the cost of timber, plasterboard and insulation move noticeably within a single year, and seen customers change specification because of it. I now understand why a fixed-price quote given months in advance can be a serious risk to a small contractor, and why materials price fluctuation clauses exist. I have also learned to be careful and quick with numbers under pressure, since a mistake on a quantity means someone drives back with the wrong load.
Two afternoons a week I look after my younger brother, who is nine, until my mother finishes her shift. That means cooking, homework supervision and getting him to football on time. It has made me organised in a way I would not have chosen: I plan my own revision around fixed commitments rather than hoping for free evenings. Managing a weekly food budget for the two of us has also given me a practical feel for how small recurring costs add up, which is less trivial than it sounds when I think about running costs over a building's life.
On Saturdays when I am not working I help at a community project that repairs and redistributes furniture and household items. I started by cleaning and sanding and now help price items and keep the stock records. Deciding what something is worth when there is no obvious market price, and explaining that figure to someone who disagrees, has been useful preparation for a subject built on valuation and negotiation. The project has also shown me the labour cost hidden in reuse: a wardrobe that takes three volunteer hours to repair is only cheap because nobody is paid.
I play in a local netball team as centre, which requires constant communication, and I recently helped organise the fixture rota after our usual organiser moved away. I would like to qualify as a quantity surveyor, and I am looking for a course with a placement year so that I can test my classroom understanding against real cost plans.
