Why do you want to study this course or subject?
I started keeping weather records because my dad complained that the forecast was always wrong for our street. I built a simple station from a kit, mounted a rain gauge on a fence post and began logging daily rainfall and maximum and minimum temperatures in a spreadsheet. Two years on, the most interesting part is not any single reading but what the series shows: our garden is consistently warmer at night than the airport figures quoted on the news, and my rainfall totals swing wildly between months that the long-term averages smooth into something tidy. That gap between an average and an actual measurement is what pulled me towards climate science rather than geography alone. I want to understand how observations from thousands of imperfect instruments, satellites and ice cores are combined into statements about the whole system, and how much confidence each step can carry. Reading around the subject has shown me how much physics sits underneath it. Working through the basics of radiative balance in my own time made sense of why greenhouse gases matter in a way that a diagram of arrows never did, and it also showed me the limits of what I can do at this level, since feedbacks and ocean heat uptake need proper modelling and numerical methods. I am drawn to a degree that teaches the atmospheric physics and the statistics together, and that treats uncertainty as something to quantify rather than apologise for. Longer term I am interested in regional projections and how they are used by people who have to plan drainage, planting or building work.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
Geography has given me the broadest grounding, particularly the units on atmospheric circulation, carbon and water cycles, and hazard risk. I enjoyed the coursework most, because it required me to defend my own sampling decisions rather than repeat a case study, and I learned to write about error honestly after my soil infiltration results turned out far noisier than I expected. Physics has been the subject that changed how I think. Thermodynamics, wave behaviour and the treatment of energy transfer are directly relevant, and the required practical work taught me to record raw data properly and to estimate uncertainty instead of guessing at it. Maths supports both: I have found calculus and the statistics modules especially useful, since correlation, regression and sampling ideas appear constantly in climate work, and I can now read a graph with confidence intervals and understand what it is and is not claiming. Outside lessons I have read Mike Hulme's Why We Disagree About Climate Change, which pushed me to think about why the same evidence produces such different responses, and I follow the Met Office blog and the monthly UK climate summaries, which are a good check on my own local readings. I also taught myself enough Python to plot my weather data, fit a straight line through it and calculate monthly means, which was slow going but has made me keen to learn programming properly as part of a degree rather than in fragments.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
Last spring I worked with two classmates on a college project measuring the urban heat island effect in our town. We agreed a simple transect from the retail park to the park gates, took air temperature readings at fixed points on three clear evenings using the same thermometer, and recorded cloud cover and wind so we could note when conditions were not comparable. My job was the data handling: entering readings, checking for transcription errors and producing the graphs. We found the town centre readings were consistently higher than the park, though the difference varied and our sample was far too small to claim a figure with any authority. Presenting it to our class taught me to describe what we had actually shown and to say plainly where the method was weak, which felt more useful than overstating it. I work Saturdays and holidays at a garden centre, mostly on tills and watering. Customers ask a lot about which plants will cope with dry summers or with the waterlogged clay soil common around here, and answering sensibly has made climate change feel practical rather than abstract. The job has also taught me to stay organised when the queue is long and to explain things to people who have not read the label. At college I help run the environment group, where my contribution has been unglamorous but steady: booking the room, keeping notes and putting together a short guide to the local bus routes for students who drive in. I play in a community brass band, which has taught me the value of turning up regularly and practising the parts nobody notices.
