Why do you want to study this course or subject?

My interest in animal nutrition began with something very ordinary: a bag of layers pellets. I have kept six hens at home since I was fourteen, and when egg production dropped one spring I started reading properly about calcium availability, grit, and why shell quality depends on more than just how much a bird eats. That led me to realise how much of animal health is decided by diet formulation rather than treatment, and how much chemistry sits behind a feed label. Studying Biology and Chemistry together has made that link clearer. Learning about ruminant digestion in Biology alongside enzyme kinetics and buffering in Chemistry showed me that the rumen is essentially a fermentation vessel whose stability depends on pH management, and that adjusting forage to concentrate ratios is applied science rather than guesswork. I want a degree that takes me into that detail: nutrient requirements across species and life stages, feed evaluation, and the awkward compromises between animal performance, cost and environmental impact. Geography has also shaped my thinking, particularly work on land use and nitrogen cycling, which made me consider how feeding decisions on a farm affect emissions and water quality well beyond the shed. I am drawn to a subject where laboratory analysis, livestock husbandry and sustainability arguments meet, and where the answers are measurable.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

My A-levels give me the foundations the course requires. In Biology I have covered digestion and absorption, respiration and metabolic pathways, and I chose gut microbiota for an independent research task, comparing how fibre fermentation differs between monogastrics and ruminants. In Chemistry I enjoy quantitative work most; titrations and calculations involving moles and concentration have given me confidence with the kind of arithmetic feed formulation demands, and organic chemistry helped me understand why fatty acid structure matters in a ration. Geography contributes coursework on farming systems, including a fieldwork report on soil and grassland management on a nearby upland farm, where I collected soil samples and interviewed the tenant about stocking density. Outside my subjects, I have read Feeding the World by Vaclav Smil, which made me think harder about nitrogen and protein supply, and I follow reports from AHDB on forage quality because the practical guidance is written for people making real decisions. I have also worked through a short online course on livestock and climate to understand how methane from enteric fermentation is measured and why estimates vary. Writing up practicals to a clear format has taught me to separate what my results show from what I assumed they would show, which I expect to matter in laboratory modules on feed analysis.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

For a week last summer I shadowed a dairy nutritionist on her farm visits. My role was strictly that of an observer and helper: I carried equipment, held sample bags open, recorded silage dry matter figures she called out, and wrote up my own notes each evening. Watching her assess a total mixed ration by sieving it for particle length, and then explain to a farmer why sorting at the feed face was reducing fibre intake, showed me that the job involves persuasion and listening as much as calculation. I was not allowed to advise anyone, and I understood why. My Saturday job at a farm shop and feed store is where I have learned most consistently. I help customers find products, so I have had to learn the differences between conditioning mixes, balancers and straights, and when to say I do not know and fetch the manager. Handling stock has also taught me about storage, spoilage and reading a declaration panel carefully. At the pony sanctuary I volunteer fortnightly, mucking out, filling water buckets and weighing feeds against the board in the barn; the staff weigh-tape the ponies regularly, and seeing the records for a laminitis-prone pony made restricted grazing much more real than a textbook case study. I play in a local netball team and manage the kit rota, which keeps me organised and used to working with people who are not always punctual.
