Why do you want to study this course or subject?
We have eleven Shetland ewes, and two of them consistently produce lambs that grow faster than the rest on the same grazing. When I first noticed this I assumed it was luck, or that I was remembering the good lambs and forgetting the others. So I started writing things down: sire, dam, birth date, single or twin, weight at eight weeks. Three seasons later the pattern is still there, and it is that gap between an impression and a measurement that pulled me towards genetics rather than general animal science. I want to understand why a difference persists, how much of it is inherited, and how anyone can tell the two apart without fooling themselves. Reading around the subject showed me how much careful statistics sits underneath breeding decisions. The idea of heritability as a property of a population in a particular environment, rather than a fixed fact about an animal, was genuinely surprising to me and changed how I read breed society literature. I am also interested in the awkward parts: selection for one trait dragging another along with it, the loss of variation in small populations, and the conservation value of native breeds that are not commercially competitive. Alongside this I have become curious about genomic selection and what it means for smallholders who will never sequence anything, but who still buy rams from people who do. A degree combining quantitative genetics, animal physiology and data analysis is exactly the combination I want, because the interesting questions in breeding seem to need all three at once.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
Biology has given me the groundwork I rely on most. The genetics and inheritance content was the section I enjoyed revising, and the statistics we use for hypothesis testing has been directly useful to me outside lessons. My Mathematics A level matters just as much: doing probability and regression properly has made me more sceptical about small samples, including my own. When I worked out means for my lamb weights I realised that with only a handful of animals per sire I could not separate a real difference from ordinary variation, which was a useful and slightly deflating thing to learn. Geography might look unrelated, but the fieldwork skills transfer well. We designed a sampling strategy for a river study, argued about where to place transects, and then wrote up the limitations honestly, which is closer to research practice than anything else I have done at college. For my Biology coursework I investigated the effect of temperature on germination rate, and the part I found hardest was controlling conditions well enough for the results to mean anything. Outside the syllabus I read agricultural and livestock press in the shop's back room on quiet afternoons, which keeps me aware of breeding indexes and how they are actually discussed by farmers. I have also been slowly working through an introductory book on population genetics, going back over the algebra when it stops making sense rather than skipping ahead.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
Most of my practical experience comes from the flock at home. I handle routine jobs: foot checks, condition scoring, and helping at lambing, including sitting up on cold nights with a ewe who needed watching. The record keeping is mine. I built the spreadsheet myself, redesigned it once after realising I had no consistent way of noting assisted births, and now use it when we decide which ewe lambs to keep. Last autumn I put together a one-page summary of growth rates by dam for my parents, and we changed one culling decision because of it. I was careful to say the numbers were suggestive rather than conclusive, and I still think that was the right call. My Saturday job at a farm supplies shop has taught me a great deal by accident. Customers explain their problems while I fetch mineral buckets, and I have heard the same breeding questions answered very differently by different people, which made me want a proper grounding rather than accumulated opinion. I also learned to be quick and accurate with stock counts and till work. With a friend from college I helped run a poultry stand at our county show, taking turns on the pens, answering questions from families and keeping the water topped up in the heat. Splitting the shifts and agreeing in advance who explained what made a long day manageable. I play in a local wind band, where second clarinet has taught me the value of being reliably in the right place rather than noticeable. Together these things have made me practical, patient with repetitive measurement, and comfortable working alongside people who know more than I do.
