Personal statement example
My interest in aquatic animal health grew out of the unglamorous end of fishkeeping: cloudy water, refused food, and a fish holding one fin oddly. I work Saturdays and Sundays on the livestock counter of an aquatics shop, and the questions I am asked are almost always health questions in disguise. Someone wants to add three more fish to a tank that has been running for a fortnight; someone else has treated a whitespot outbreak three times without changing the temperature or checking the nitrite. Explaining the difference between a pathogen, a stressor and a husbandry error, to people who simply want a quick bottle of something, taught me how much of this field is applied physiology plus clear communication. It also taught me to ask for the water parameters before the symptoms.
My degree gave me the scientific grounding behind those conversations. Modules in fish biology, invertebrate zoology and parasitology were the ones I returned to voluntarily, and I chose statistics options because I wanted to be able to judge whether a reported treatment effect meant anything. For my final-year project I sampled wild mullet caught by a local angling club in the estuary near my home, and examined gills and skin mucus for metazoan and protozoan parasites. The laboratory work was straightforward once I had practised; the harder parts were building a consistent sampling protocol around the anglers' availability, keeping records that were honest about gaps, and accepting that my sample size limited what I could claim. I found monogenean infestation was more common in smaller fish, but I wrote carefully about the confounding effect of sampling location rather than overstating a size relationship. My supervisor's main comment was that the discussion was appropriately cautious, which I took as a compliment.
Outside university I volunteer with a fishkeeping society that meets monthly in a community hall. Two years ago I offered to run a water-testing table, and it has become a fixture: members bring a sample, we test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH and hardness, and we talk through what the numbers suggest. Over time I put together a simple one-page record card so people could track changes between meetings rather than relying on memory, and several members now bring a run of results with them. It is modest, but it has changed the conversations we have, and it made me realise how much diagnostic value sits in routine monitoring. I have also helped with a koi pond health day, holding fish while a more experienced member took mucus scrapes, and watching how differently a large ornamental fish must be handled.
I want to move from recognising problems to investigating them properly. I am particularly interested in the health constraints on finfish and shellfish aquaculture: bacterial and parasitic disease in intensive systems, biosecurity between sites, and the tension between treatment options and welfare. Reading around gill disease in farmed salmonids showed me how multifactorial these conditions are, and how much depends on surveillance and husbandry rather than medication alone. Postgraduate study would give me structured training in diagnostic pathology, epidemiology and disease legislation that I cannot acquire behind a shop counter.
In the longer term I would like to work in fish health monitoring, either for an aquaculture company or a diagnostic laboratory, and eventually contribute to the practical guidance that people like my club members actually use.
