Why do you want to study this course or subject?
The fish counter in our local shop has a small chalkboard listing where each species came from, and it changes with the seasons. Asking about it is how I first learned that the plaice in the tray had come from a named fishing ground, that the hake was more available than it used to be, and that the man who fillets it worries about crew numbers as much as about catch. That mixture of biology, economics and people is what pulls me towards marine resource management rather than marine biology alone. I am interested in stocks as populations with measurable dynamics, but also in why a quota that looks sensible on paper is resented on a quayside. Reading Callum Roberts's The Unnatural History of the Sea changed how I think about baselines: it made me realise that what I consider a normal shore or a normal catch is already a depleted version of something earlier, and that judgements about recovery depend on which past you choose. In Geography I studied coastal management and saw how often decisions involve trade-offs between groups with genuine claims, which is closer to fisheries policy than I expected. I want a degree that teaches stock assessment, survey design and statistics properly, alongside aquaculture, governance and the legal framework of marine protected areas, so that I can contribute to advice that is technically defensible and workable for the people it affects. In the longer term I would like to work for a fisheries science body or an inshore conservation authority, on the unglamorous business of gathering reliable data and explaining it clearly.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
My A-levels in Biology, Geography and Mathematics each support different parts of this course. Biology has given me the ecological grounding I use most: energy transfer through trophic levels, population growth models, and the practical work on sampling, where I learned to use quadrats and transects and to think about why a sample might not represent a site. Writing up a distribution investigation taught me to be honest about limitations rather than tidy them away. Mathematics matters more than I first appreciated. Working through probability, exponential and logarithmic functions and statistical hypothesis testing has made me comfortable with the idea that fisheries advice rests on models fitted to imperfect data, and I chose to practise Chi-squared and correlation tests on my own survey results so the statistics felt less abstract. Geography contributes the human side: coastal processes and defence schemes, and a unit on resource futures where I compared management approaches and had to weigh evidence from sources with clear interests. I also completed an extended project in college on whether inshore mussel harvesting in the North West could be described as sustainable, which forced me to read government stock summaries and fishery management plans and to accept that the answer depended on how I defined the term. Alongside lessons I follow updates from the Marine Management Organisation and have taught myself the basics of spreadsheets for recording and plotting data, which I expect to build on with proper training in statistical software.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
Formal placements are scarce here, so I made my own project. Since last spring I have surveyed the same stretch of rocky shore roughly once a fortnight on spring low tides, using a quadrat I built from garden cane and string. I record limpets, common periwinkles and dogwhelks in five quadrats along a fixed transect, note the barnacle zone and take a photograph from the same rock each time. It is repetitive, and my early records were unusable because I had not fixed the transect properly, so I restarted with marked reference points. A year of data has shown clear zonation and a slow seasonal shift in periwinkle numbers, though I am cautious about reading much into it. Collecting the same figures in cold rain taught me more about survey work than any single field trip. I volunteer with a beach clean group that weighs and categorises what it collects, which introduced me to the value of standard recording forms, and I have joined two of their strandline identification walks. My Saturday job in a fish and chip shop is ordinary but useful: I handle stock, notice which species become expensive and when, and talk to customers and suppliers about it. I also coach a junior girls' football side on Sunday mornings, which has made me far better at explaining something clearly to people who are not naturally interested yet, and at keeping a group organised in bad weather. I am a reliable, patient worker who is happy with detail, and I am looking forward to fieldwork, boat-based survey training and learning to handle real datasets.
