Why do you want to study this course or subject?
I became interested in horses through mucking out rather than riding. When I was fifteen a neighbour who keeps two cobs asked if I would help with evening feeds while she recovered from shoulder surgery, and I stayed on because I found the routine genuinely interesting. I wanted to know why one pony held weight on almost nothing while the other needed a hard feed, why hooves changed shape between summer and winter, and why the older cob became stiff on frozen ground but moved freely on the school surface. Nobody at the yard could always answer, and the answers I found online often contradicted each other, which pushed me towards wanting a proper scientific grounding rather than accumulated yard wisdom. Equine science appeals to me because it treats the horse as a whole animal: digestive anatomy that evolved for continuous forage intake, a musculoskeletal system carrying loads it was not designed to carry, and behaviour shaped by management decisions people make for convenience. I am particularly drawn to nutrition and exercise physiology, and to the gap between what research shows and what happens in practice on ordinary yards with limited money and time. I would like to work in an advisory or nutrition role eventually, translating evidence for owners like the ones I know, so a degree combining laboratory science with applied equine study is what I am looking for.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
My A-levels in Biology, Chemistry and Geography give me the background I need. Biology has been the most directly useful: the digestion and transport topics helped me understand why hindgut fermentation makes horses so dependent on fibre, and the homeostasis work made me think differently about thermoregulation in clipped and rugged horses. Chemistry is harder for me but I have kept at it because I want to understand feed analysis rather than just read labels; learning about buffers and pH made the discussion of hindgut acidosis in horses fed large cereal meals much clearer. Geography has been an unexpected help, partly through soil and drainage work that connects to grazing management and mud in gateways, and partly through the statistics and fieldwork skills. For my geography coursework I collected my own data on a local stream, and writing that up taught me to be honest about sample size and confounding factors, which is something I have carried into everything else. I also took an extended project qualification on whether restricted grazing is an effective approach to managing weight in native ponies. Working through review articles and government welfare guidance was demanding, and I had to accept that the evidence was less tidy than I expected, but it improved my referencing, my note-taking and my willingness to read something difficult twice.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
For two mornings a week before college I help at a riding school five miles from home, cycling there in term time. My jobs are ordinary ones: skipping out, filling haynets, turning out, tacking up beginners and sweeping the yard. Over eighteen months I have learnt to notice things quickly, such as a pony standing away from its haynet, a change in droppings, or heat in a lower leg. I have watched the farrier and once the vet doing a lameness workup, and I asked questions afterwards rather than pretending I understood at the time.
Last winter, with the yard owner's permission, I ran a small project on four horses in adjoining stables. I weighed their haynets before and after each night using kitchen scales, recorded a body condition score and heart girth measurement every fortnight, and noted rug changes and turnout hours. It was rough work, not research: the scales were unreliable, one horse pulled hay onto the floor, and I could not control what happened during the day. Even so, the records showed how much more one cob ate relative to its size and how little the fortnightly measurements moved over eight weeks, which surprised me and made me appreciate how slowly condition changes and how easily owners misjudge it by eye. I also filmed horses trotting on concrete and on the outdoor surface and compared the footage frame by frame, which taught me how hard consistent observation is.
My Saturday job at a garden centre has built patience with customers who want a quick answer to a complicated question, and I supervise the tills during busy weekends. I also play netball for a local club team, where I have been organising lifts to away matches, and I help my younger brother with his reading most evenings. Together these have made me reliable about early starts, commitments and finishing tasks properly, which I think matters for a practical degree.
