Why do you want to study this course or subject?
The hill behind our village is common land, grazed by sheep from three farms and crossed by walkers most weekends. From the lane it looks unchanging, but over a few summers I noticed the bracken creeping further down one slope while the wet flush near the gate stayed rich with bog plants. That contrast is what pulled me towards rangeland management: grassland and moorland are not simply background scenery but systems shaped by stocking rates, timing, weather and decisions made by people who often have very little margin for error. I want to understand how those decisions are made and how they could be made better. Reading around the subject has shown me how technical the field is. Learning about rotational grazing and rest periods changed how I looked at our hill, because it made me ask when animals are on a patch rather than only how many there are. I also became interested in the idea that grassland can be resilient without looking neat, and that recovery after drought or heavy grazing depends heavily on root reserves and seed banks rather than on anything visible from the road. A degree course attracts me because I want the soil science, plant identification and livestock nutrition that sit underneath those arguments, alongside the economics and policy that shape what a grazier can realistically do. Longer term I would like to work as an adviser or grazing officer for a commons association, a national park or a conservation body, in a role where I am out on the ground with farmers rather than only writing plans about them. I am aware that much of the international literature concerns semi-arid rangelands very different from Welsh hill pasture, and I am keen to study those comparisons properly rather than assume our conditions are typical.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
My A-levels give me a useful mix for this subject. Biology has provided the plant physiology and ecology that underpin grazing management, and I found the practical work on transpiration and on enzyme activity valuable simply for learning to be patient with method. Geography has been the strongest influence on how I think, especially the units on soils, water in drainage basins and rural change, which taught me to look at land as the product of both physical process and land tenure. Environmental Science has filled in gaps around nutrient cycling, monitoring and pollution, and has involved the most independent work. For my Environmental Science coursework I surveyed a fifty-metre strip of field margin near home, recording species with quadrats along a transect from the hedge towards the improved pasture. It took four visits across the spring, and my first set of records was too rushed to be useful, so I repeated them once I could identify grasses more confidently with a key. The clearest result was a fall in species number over the last few metres where fertiliser and stock pressure were heaviest. It was a small piece of work, but it taught me how much care sampling design needs and how easily an average can hide the interesting edges of a pattern. Alongside lessons I have taken on statistics in my own time, working through examples on standard deviation and simple correlation so that I can interpret monitoring data rather than just collect it. I also read agricultural press and Natural Resources Wales material on grazing and peatland to keep up with current debates, and I have been improving my Welsh terminology for farming vocabulary, which I expect to be practical if I work in upland communities.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
On Saturdays and through the holidays I work at a farm supplies shop in the nearest market town, mostly stacking feed, checking deliveries and serving at the counter. It has given me a far more grounded picture of farming than reading alone: I have heard customers weigh up buying extra silage against selling store lambs early, and I have learned to ask clear questions rather than guess when someone needs a specific mineral bucket or fencing item. Handling stock control taught me to be accurate with records, because a miscounted pallet becomes somebody else's problem on Monday. I also volunteer at a community orchard on alternate Sundays. Last winter two of us were given the job of mapping the trees and recording which had died or been replaced, producing a numbered plan the group could use for pruning rotas. Working as a pair meant agreeing a consistent way of recording things before we started, which saved us re-walking the site. The plan is now pinned inside the shed and has been used for two seasons, which I am quietly pleased about. At home I help with a large vegetable plot and keep six hens, which has made me realistic about how much time livestock takes even on a tiny scale. For enjoyment I walk the local hills and have been slowly building a photographic record of one bracken-invaded slope from the same spot each August. Beyond that, playing bass in a scratch band at school taught me to keep time for other people rather than for myself, which is not a bad description of teamwork in fieldwork too. I am practical, comfortable outdoors in poor weather, and ready for a course that mixes laboratory work, farm visits and long days on foot.
