Why do you want to study this course or subject?
The wildlife park near my grandparents' village keeps a pair of Bactrian camels in a paddock I have walked past since I was small. A few years ago the enclosure changed: sand pits, a rubbing post, browse hung at head height rather than food simply tipped into a trough. The camels were noticeably more active, and a sign explained that the changes had come from staff recording how the animals used the space. That was the first time I understood that a zoo is not only a collection of animals but a place where housing, diet and behaviour are treated as questions to be tested. Zoo biology appeals to me because it sits where animal behaviour, physiology, conservation genetics and practical management meet. I am interested in how captive populations are managed across collections, how studbooks and breeding recommendations try to keep genetic diversity workable in small populations, and how welfare can be assessed with evidence rather than assumption. Reading Georgia Mason and Jeffrey Rushen's work on stereotypic behaviour changed how I look at pacing and repetitive movement; I now think about what an animal is prevented from doing rather than simply what it is doing. I also want to engage with the difficult parts of the field, including which species collections should hold, whether reintroduction is a realistic aim for most captive-bred animals, and how education programmes are evaluated. A degree that combines behavioural science with population management and hands-on species knowledge is what I am looking for, and I would like to work eventually in welfare assessment or collection planning.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
Biology A level has given me the foundations I rely on most. The modules on homeostasis, endocrine control and energy transfer help me make sense of why nutrition and thermal management matter so much for species kept outside their native climate, and the ecology and statistics content introduced me to sampling design, chi-squared tests and the difference between correlation and a plausible mechanism. For my required practical work I ran a choice-chamber investigation on woodlice, which sounds simple but taught me how quickly poor design ruins results; my first attempt failed because I had not controlled for the light gradient across the bench. Geography has been unexpectedly useful for thinking about conservation at landscape scale, particularly the units on biodiversity loss, habitat fragmentation and how protected areas are governed. It pushes me to consider the situation into which a reintroduced animal would actually be released, rather than treating captive breeding as an end in itself. Psychology has trained me in research methods, ethics and the interpretation of behavioural data, and topics on learning and conditioning connect directly to training and enrichment in collections. I took a free online short course on animal behaviour over one summer, which introduced ethograms and time-sampling methods, and I have since used a simple ethogram to record the activity of my neighbours' rabbits over a fortnight. I read Zoo Quarterly-style articles and follow BIAZA news to keep track of how collections describe their own research priorities.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
For six Saturdays I volunteered at a small regional wildlife park as a visitor-engagement helper. My responsibilities were firmly supportive: staffing an information table with skulls, feathers and shed snake skin, answering straightforward visitor questions, checking that hand-washing stations were stocked, and helping stewards manage queues at the meerkat talk. I was not permitted to enter enclosures or handle animals, but I could observe keepers preparing food and scatter-feeding, and I asked questions during quieter periods. One keeper explained why the tapir's enrichment was rotated on a schedule rather than offered daily, and how they logged what she interacted with. I also learned how much of the job is cleaning, record-keeping and talking to the public. Being on the information table taught me to explain something clearly without overstating what I knew, and to say honestly when a question needed a member of staff. My weekend job at a garden centre involves watering stock, advising customers on planting and dealing with complaints about failed shrubs; it has made me reliable in early starts and poor weather, which I expect to be relevant to animal work. At college I help run the gardening club, where we manage a small plot and this year built a log pile and planted a native hedge section; monitoring which insects appeared has been a modest lesson in how slowly habitat change shows results. I am also the person at home who looks after our elderly cat's medication and weight records, which has made me attentive to small changes in appetite and behaviour over time.
