Why do you want to study this course or subject?
Part of my Saturday job at a builders' merchant is handling returns, and a surprising number involve timber: a customer brings back skirting board that has cupped, or decking that has split around the screw holes, or joinery that no longer fits the opening it was measured for. At first I repeated what I had been told, that the wood had "moved". Then I started asking why some boards moved far more than others from the same pack, and nobody could give me an answer that satisfied me. Reading about it, I found that wood is not a single material but a cellular composite whose behaviour depends on cell wall chemistry, grain direction and the water held between and within the cell walls. Shrinkage being roughly twice as great tangentially as radially explained the cupping I was seeing far better than any complaint about quality. That was the point where timber stopped being stock on a rack and became a material with an internal structure I wanted to understand properly. Wood science and technology appeals to me because it sits where my three A-levels already meet. Chemistry gives me cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, and the reasons adhesives and preservatives behave as they do. Physics gives me stiffness, anisotropy and moisture transport. Design and Technology has taught me to think about how a material is actually specified, machined and sold. I am also drawn to the industrial side: engineered products such as glued laminated timber and cross-laminated timber take a variable, biological raw material and turn it into something predictable enough to build with, and I would like to work on that kind of problem rather than only study it. I am interested in modification and durability too, since much of what comes back to our counter has failed at a joint or a surface rather than in the middle of a board.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
My A-levels in Chemistry, Physics and Design and Technology have each fed into this interest in a different way. In Chemistry I have enjoyed organic structure and bonding most, and polymer topics gave me a vocabulary for thinking about cellulose chains and cross-linking in resins. The practical endorsement has been valuable for the routine discipline of it: recording masses properly, repeating a titration until my results agree, and accepting that an anomalous reading usually means my technique rather than an exciting discovery. In Physics I have worked on materials properties, stress and strain, and thermal and moisture behaviour, and I am comfortable with Young's modulus as a concept even though I found the idea of a material having different values along different axes genuinely unexpected when I first met it in wood. My Design and Technology coursework has probably taught me the most about timber in practice. I designed and built a small wall-mounted rack for drying herbs, choosing beech for the machined parts and testing three finishes on offcuts before committing. I had to justify my material choice against cost, workability and moisture exposure, and I learned to read supplier data sheets carefully rather than trusting the marketing text. Writing that up trained me to explain decisions in evidence rather than preference. Alongside lessons I have used the local library and free online lecture material to read more widely, including introductory texts on wood structure and anatomy, which is how I first understood the difference between earlywood and latewood and why softwood and hardwood are anatomical terms rather than descriptions of hardness. I also take Core Maths, which has improved my handling of data, units and percentage error, and I expect to lean on that heavily in a degree with laboratory work and materials testing.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
Because I do not have access to a laboratory outside college, I set up a small project at home using timber offcuts my manager let me take from damaged packs. I cut twenty short samples of softwood and hardwood, weighed them on kitchen scales accurate to a gram, and kept half on a windowsill above a radiator and half in an unheated shed through the winter, weighing and measuring each one weekly for eleven weeks. The results were rough, but the pattern was clear: the radiator samples lost mass quickly and then stabilised, and two of them developed end splits, while the shed samples stayed heavier and one grew surface mould. Measuring width across and along the grain with a steel rule showed me directly that the changes were not the same in every direction. The main thing I learned was how much my own method limited me. My scales could not resolve small changes, I had no way of knowing the actual moisture content without oven drying, and I had not controlled humidity at all. Writing that down honestly has made me keen to work with proper conditioning chambers and moisture meters rather than guesswork. At work I now pay closer attention to the grade stamps and the way packs are stored, and I have asked our timber supplier's driver questions about kiln drying, which he answered patiently. I volunteer once a month at a community repair session in a church hall, mostly cleaning, gluing and clamping chair joints and drawer runners. It has taught me practical things about adhesives and clamping pressure, and about explaining to someone why a repair may not hold. Outside this I play in a local badminton league, which keeps my weeks structured alongside shifts and coursework, and I have improved at managing my time since taking on extra hours. I would like a degree that combines laboratory work with industrial application, and I am comfortable with the idea of spending time on a production site.
