Personal statement example
My interest in water resources engineering grew out of a hydraulics module in the second year of my civil engineering degree, which I expected to be the driest thing on the timetable. Instead, working through open channel flow and the Manning equation gave me a way of describing something I had grown up watching: the brook behind our estate, which is unremarkable for most of the year and then, two or three times each winter, spreads across the footpath and the corner of the playing field. Once I could put numbers to roughness, gradient and cross-section, the flooding stopped looking like bad luck and started looking like a design problem.
For my final-year project I built a simple hydrological model of a small urban catchment near the university, using publicly available rainfall records, LiDAR-derived terrain data and land cover mapping to estimate runoff response under different assumptions about impermeable area. The modelling itself was modest, and the most useful part of the work was learning how much the results depended on choices I had made almost casually: the infiltration parameters, the resolution of the terrain grid, whether I treated a row of gardens as permeable or not. I spent a long time on sensitivity testing and on writing up the uncertainty honestly rather than presenting a single tidy hydrograph. My supervisor's main criticism was that I had underestimated how much drainage infrastructure sits below the surface and diverts flow in ways the terrain does not show. That gap is one reason I want formal training in urban drainage and water distribution modelling rather than continuing to teach myself from documentation.
My degree gave me a reasonable grounding in fluid mechanics, geotechnics, structural analysis and engineering mathematics, and I did well in the numerical and computational elements. I taught myself enough Python during my third year to automate the data handling for my project, and I now prefer scripted workflows because they can be checked and rerun. I read around the subject where I can: David Sear and colleagues' work on river restoration came up in a coursework reading list and pushed me towards thinking about channels as living systems rather than conveyance capacity alone, and I have followed Environment Agency consultation documents on catchment management with more interest than I expected.
Outside study I have worked most weekends for three years at a garden centre, which sounds tangential but has taught me a surprising amount about soils, drainage and how ordinary customers talk about water. Advising someone whose lawn floods every autumn means translating technical ideas into practical options and being honest about what will not work — a skill I suspect matters as much in consultancy as any modelling package. I also volunteer with a group that clears litter from a stretch of river in the city; the monthly surveys of what we pull out have made me pay attention to how catchments are used as well as how they behave.
I am looking for a master's that combines hydrology and hydraulic modelling with water quality, supply systems and the policy context in which schemes are funded and approved. In the longer term I want to work in flood risk and drainage design, ideally with a consultancy involved in surface water management schemes, and I would like eventually to gain chartered status. I recognise I am coming from academic work rather than site experience, so I am keen to take on group design projects and any industry-linked coursework available, and to build the practical judgement that my final-year project showed I still need.
