Why do you want to study this course or subject?
The bin store behind the shop where I work has three containers and a permanent argument attached to it. Cardboard goes flat in one, glass in another, and everything else ends up in general waste because nobody is certain which plastics the contractor takes. When I started weighing what we threw out on a Saturday, out of curiosity more than anything, I found that a surprising share was clean film and punnets that had nowhere to go. That is not a problem of laziness. It is a problem of materials that are cheap to make, hard to sort and worth very little once mixed, and of collection systems designed around what is convenient to move rather than what is easy to recover. I want to study waste management because it sits exactly where my favourite subjects meet: the chemistry of what a material actually is, the process engineering of separating and treating it, and the geography of who produces it and where it goes. Chemistry gave me the language for calorific value, leachate and polymer types. Geography gave me the questions about export, landfill siting and the uneven way environmental burdens fall. I am drawn to the unglamorous, quantitative side of the field, such as mass balances across a materials recovery facility, moisture content in food waste destined for digestion, and the limits of mechanical recycling when additives and dyes come along for the ride. I would like to work eventually in the design or operation of treatment and recovery plants, and I want a degree that treats waste as a feedstock and a hazard at the same time, rather than as something that simply disappears once the lorry has gone.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
I am studying Chemistry, Geography and Maths at A level. Chemistry has been the most directly useful: the organic module helped me understand why polyethylene and PET behave so differently when heated, and practical work on titration and calorimetry taught me to be honest about uncertainty rather than quietly rounding towards the answer I expected. Maths gives me the confidence to handle rates, logarithms and the statistics I need when comparing sets of measurements, and I have found differential equations surprisingly satisfying now that I can see them describing how a substance concentration changes over time. Geography contributed the systems thinking. A unit on the carbon cycle made me more careful about boundaries, because whether incineration looks good or bad depends enormously on what you count and where you stop counting. My EPQ asked whether kerbside sorting or commingled collection produces less contamination in practice. I read local authority waste strategies, a WRAP report on recycling behaviour and the waste hierarchy as set out in policy, and I learned that the evidence is genuinely mixed and cost-sensitive, which was uncomfortable but more interesting than the clear conclusion I had hoped to write. Writing it taught me to reference properly, to separate a council's stated aim from its reported tonnages, and to admit in my conclusion where my sample of sources was too thin to support a strong claim. I also completed an extra module of independent reading on life cycle assessment, which I found demanding but clarifying.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
Alongside college I work about ten hours a week in an independent grocery shop, mostly on tills and at the refill counter where customers bring their own containers for pasta, oats and detergent. I weigh, record and restock, and I explain the system to people who have never used it. The job has made me realistic: refill works when the containers are convenient and the queue is short, and it fails when either of those breaks down. I have also had to log wastage from the chiller, which is a daily reminder that prevention sits above recovery for good reason. For my own interest I ran a small project at college, auditing the contents of four bins in the common room over two weeks with permission from site staff. I sorted and weighed by hand with gloves, categorised items, and presented the results to the eco group with a proposal to move the bins into pairs and relabel them with photographs of real items rather than symbols. The relabelling went ahead and the following audit showed noticeably less liquid in the paper bin, although I am aware two weeks of data proves very little. Once a month I help at a repair session in the library, taking names, testing lamps and kettles for continuity under supervision, and watching volunteers decide whether something is worth mending. That has shaped how I think about design for disassembly. I play in a local netball team, which keeps my weekends busy and has taught me to organise my time around fixed commitments.
