Why do you want to study this course or subject?
My aunt keeps eight laying hens in a suburban garden, and I have spent three years helping with them: mixing feed, checking crops and combs, and learning to spot the difference between a hen that is sulking after moulting and one that is genuinely unwell. When one developed a limp last spring, I watched the vet work through causes methodically, from bumblefoot to a joint infection, and explain why the treatment plan depended on the whole flock rather than one bird. That way of thinking, weighing evidence, cost, welfare and risk together, is what draws me to veterinary science rather than to animal care alone. Reading has broadened that interest well beyond poultry. James Herriot gave me the affection for the work, but books such as Zoobiquity, on the overlap between animal and human medicine, showed me how much veterinary knowledge contributes to understanding disease generally. I have followed articles in the Veterinary Record on antimicrobial resistance in livestock and on the practical difficulties of persuading owners to complete a course of treatment, which made clear that the science is only useful if the communication works. I want a career where I am accountable for decisions, where diagnosis involves a patient who cannot describe symptoms, and where the client's circumstances genuinely shape what is possible. Veterinary science asks for competence in physiology, pathology and pharmacology alongside patience with people, and I would rather spend my working life doing something that demands both.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
I am studying Biology, Chemistry and Geography at A level. Biology has been the most directly relevant: the modules on gas exchange, circulation and the immune system gave me the vocabulary to make sense of the reading I was already doing, and comparing mammalian and avian respiratory systems for a class presentation explained why my aunt's hens are so vulnerable to dusty bedding. Chemistry has been harder and more valuable for it. Organic chemistry and reaction kinetics taught me to work carefully with mechanisms I could not simply memorise, and understanding buffers and equilibria helped me follow how blood pH is regulated when I read about metabolic disorders in cattle. Practical work has trained me in accurate technique and honest recording, including admitting when a titration needs repeating. Geography might seem the outlier, but the units on food security and land use have shaped how I think about farm animal veterinary work. Writing about intensive versus extensive livestock systems made me consider disease transmission, stocking density and the economics that constrain what a farmer can do about either. For my Extended Project I researched the arguments for and against routine vaccination of backyard poultry in the UK, which meant reading DEFRA guidance and comparing it with advice aimed at hobby keepers. I learned to handle sources of very different authority and to accept that the evidence did not settle the question as neatly as I had hoped. Alongside this I completed a college course in basic statistics, which has made me a more sceptical reader of small studies.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
For fourteen months I have volunteered on Sunday mornings at a community city farm, mucking out the goat and pig pens, refilling water, weighing feed and helping with the visitor sessions. The routine is repetitive and often cold, and that has been instructive: I have seen how much of animal health depends on unglamorous consistency, and I have learned to move calmly around animals that are stronger than me. The staff let me observe hoof trimming and a routine worming, and I keep notes afterwards on anything I want to look up. I also work Saturdays in the plant section of a garden centre, advising customers, handling deliveries and taking payments. It has made me far better at explaining something technical to someone who does not want a lecture, and at staying courteous when a customer is annoyed about something outside my control. On Thursday evenings I help at a charity shop that funds a local dog and cat rescue, where I have talked to adopters about the costs of ongoing veterinary care. With my college's environment group I help maintain two beehives. Beekeeping has taught me about colony health, varroa monitoring and the need to record treatments accurately, and I enjoy that a hive is managed as a population rather than as individuals. At home I share responsibility for my aunt's greyhounds, including their teeth, diet and the stiffness one has developed with age. I play in a netball team, which keeps me organised, and I have found that balancing shifts, revision and volunteering requires planning rather than heroics.
