Why do you want to study this course or subject?
My interest in strength and conditioning started with a question I could not answer. At netball training, our coach set us a session of repeated short sprints with very little rest, and I noticed that two of our shooters recovered quickly while I was still struggling on the fourth effort. Reading around it for a Biology homework on respiration, I found out about phosphocreatine resynthesis and how much it depends on aerobic fitness, which was not what I had assumed. That gap between what I felt in my legs and what was actually happening inside them is the reason I want to study this subject properly rather than just collect training tips online.
What appeals to me about strength and conditioning specifically is that it sits between measurement and coaching. I like the idea of testing something, interpreting the numbers honestly, and then having to explain it to an athlete who may not care about the graph. I have seen how easily good intentions go wrong: a friend at my club started a programme she found on social media, did too much too quickly and spent six weeks with shin pain. Programmes need to be built around the person in front of you, their sport, their schedule and how much sleep they are actually getting.
I am also drawn to the range of people the profession serves. Alongside elite sport, strength training matters for recreational players, older adults and people returning from injury. I would like to work eventually in a team sport setting, but I want a degree that gives me the physiology, biomechanics and coaching skills to be useful in more than one context, and that teaches me to read research rather than trust whatever is currently popular.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
My A levels have each given me something I expect to use. PE covers energy systems, training principles and skill acquisition, and I have found the practical analysis work particularly useful: for a coursework task I assessed my own performance in a match, identified my weak first step in defence, and planned a six-week programme with acceleration and single-leg strength work. Writing the justification taught me to separate what I wanted to do from what the evidence supported.
Biology has been the most demanding and the most rewarding. Muscle contraction, the structure of the sliding filament model, cardiac output and control of breathing all sit directly underneath strength and conditioning, and studying them formally stopped me relying on vague phrases like building muscle. Our practical work on the effect of exercise on heart rate also showed me how much variation there is between people doing exactly the same protocol, and why sample size and controls matter.
Psychology has changed how I think about coaching. Learning about motivation, obedience studies and research methods made me more careful about claims: I now look for how a study was designed before I take its conclusion seriously. The methods content on reliability, validity and ethics is something I expect to need when I start collecting data on real people.
Outside lessons I have kept reading. I worked through parts of Anatomy Trains and found some of it more speculative than I first assumed, which was a useful lesson, and I preferred the clearer structure of a sports science textbook from the college library covering periodisation and load monitoring. I have also started following how professional teams report training load, and I would like to understand the statistics behind those measures properly during a degree.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
Two afternoons a week I look after my younger brother, who is nine, from the end of school until my mother finishes her shift. That means cooking, homework, and getting him to football on Thursdays. It has made me organised out of necessity, because my own training and coursework have to fit around fixed commitments, and it has taught me patience when someone is tired and unwilling. Explaining long division to a distracted nine-year-old is not unlike explaining a warm-up to teenagers who would rather start the game.
At my netball club I volunteer as an assistant at the Saturday morning junior sessions for under-12s. I set up drills, demonstrate, and take small groups when the head coach needs to work with others. I have learned to give one instruction at a time and to check understanding by watching rather than asking. Last season I was asked to lead the warm-up regularly, so I built a routine with movement preparation, some hopping and landing practice and short accelerations, after reading about injury prevention programmes for young athletes. Watching landing technique improve over several weeks was more satisfying than any session I have done for myself.
My Saturday job on the till at a garden centre is unrelated to sport but has been good for me. I deal with customers who are in a hurry or unhappy, handle cash accurately when it is busy, and cover for colleagues at short notice. It has made me comfortable talking to adults of all ages, which I think matters in a profession where you have to gain people's trust quickly.
As a player I train twice a week and play on Sundays, and I have kept a simple training diary for the past year recording sessions, sleep and how heavy my legs feel. It is not sophisticated, but noticing the pattern between poor sleep and sluggish training has made the idea of monitoring load feel practical rather than abstract. I am looking forward to learning to do it rigorously.
