Why do you want to study this course or subject?
My interest in space science began with a second-hand copy of a general astronomy textbook that I bought mostly because of the pictures. What kept me reading was the chapter on remote sensing, which explained how the light reaching a detector carries information about temperature, composition and motion long before anyone visits. That idea reframed the night sky for me: rather than something to look at, it became something to measure. I want to study space science because it sits where physics becomes an instrument problem. Understanding a planetary atmosphere or a magnetosphere means understanding radiative transfer and plasma behaviour, but also the orbit the spacecraft flies, the noise in the detector and the calibration that separates signal from artefact. I find that combination genuinely satisfying to think about. My Geography A-level has added an unexpected angle. Studying glacial systems and atmospheric circulation taught me how satellite data is actually used, and how much interpretation sits between a radiometer reading and a statement about ice thickness. I would like to work on that interpretation stage. In the longer term I am drawn towards Earth observation or planetary mission science, and I want a degree that teaches the underlying physics properly rather than treating spacecraft as a backdrop.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
Physics A-level has given me the tools I use most often. Working through circular motion and gravitation made orbital mechanics feel approachable, and the required practical work has been as valuable as the theory: measuring the resistance of a thermistor and dealing with self-heating taught me more about instrument behaviour than reading about it did. I have become careful about uncertainties, and I now write them down before I start rather than afterwards. Mathematics is the subject I have had to work hardest at, particularly integration and vectors, and I improved by redoing questions without my notes until the method came from memory. I chose Further Mathematics units in complex numbers and matrices where they were available in college enrichment sessions, because I could see they would matter for a physics-based degree. Geography contributes differently. A coursework investigation on urban heat in my town involved taking surface temperature readings along a transect and comparing them with a freely available satellite thermal product. Matching my ground readings to a pixel covering a whole street taught me about spatial resolution and the limits of what a measurement really represents. That project is a large part of why I am applying to space science rather than physics alone.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
Most of my practical experience comes from astrophotography. I use a borrowed DSLR on a tripod, a 200mm lens and free stacking software, and I keep an observing log with exposure settings, conditions and the Moon's phase. My best results so far are the Orion Nebula and a reasonable image of the Pleiades taken from a field outside the village. Learning to stack frames to reduce noise, and to take dark frames because my sensor warms up over a session, has been an unplanned lesson in signal processing. I also learned to check the forecast properly after wasting several clear-looking evenings to high cloud. I help with a local astronomy society's public evenings a few times a year, mainly setting up chairs, handing out red torches and answering straightforward questions from families about what they are seeing. Explaining why stars twinkle and planets largely do not has made me better at pitching an answer to the person asking it. At home I spend an hour or two most weeks helping my younger brother with GCSE maths, which has improved my own fluency with algebra. My Saturday job at a garden centre involves stock, tills and customers, and it has taught me to stay organised and pleasant during a long shift, which I expect to be useful during laboratory days.
